Crime Blotter: Injured Officers, Strong-Arm Robberies

Here are the crimes the Berkeley Police are reporting so far this week.

Monday, April 9, 2012, Assault on Peace officers/Injury
1700 block of Martin L. King Jr. Way

At 10:41 a.m., Berkeley Police received a call regarding one roommate issuing death threats against another roommate. The-24-year-old suspect also had a possible warrant. As officers attempted to verify the suspect’s identity, the suspect attacked the two police officers. The officers, while struggling to subdue the suspect, called for “Code-3” emergency cover.  Other officers went to assist and a group was able to restrain the suspect in handcuffs.

The two officers who were attacked were transported to a local ER for medical assessment as both sustained injuries including a fracture, scrapes and bruises and could not return to duty. The suspect, who’s now and arrestee was medically cleared at a local ER for incarceration. Officers booked the suspect into Santa Rita Jail for resisting arrest, battery on a peace officer with injuries and the outstanding $20 K warrant.

Monday, April 9, 2012, Robbery Via Strong Arm
Channing Way and Telegraph Avenue 

At about 7:30 p.m., a young man said he was walking by himself near the intersection of Channing Way and Telegraph Avenue. Two unidentified male suspects walked toward him and forcibly removed his backpack from his back. The suspects then fled on foot in an unknown direction.

The victim refused to cooperate any further. He was not physically injured during the incident.

He described the suspects as one white male, 35 years, 5'8", medium build, homeless looking, grungy and dirty with a beard last seen wearing unknown clothing. And the second suspect as “a Hispanic male, 25, 5'8" 170lbs last seen wearing a red baseball cap and a red sweater.

2400 block of Dwight Way

At approximately 8:05 p.m., a 22-year-old male was walking east on Dwight Way when two male suspects approached him from front, blocked his path and demanded his wallet and cell phone. The victim followed the suspects and confronted them. The suspects ran west on Dwight Way on foot. A passing pedestrian found the victim’s cell phone and another called the police. The suspect made off with the victim’s small amount of cash from his wallet. The victim was not physically injured during the incident.

The victim described the suspects as one black a black male, 20s, 5’7”, 110 lbs, wearing a black beanie, red tee shirt and blue jeans.” And the second suspect as “a black male, 20s wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.”
