Coroner Cites Drugs in Police Custody Death of Kayla Moore

An Alameda County Coroner's report released today, Friday, says a drug overdose caused the death of Kayla Moore, a 41-year-old transgender Berkeley resident who died in police custody in February, according to news reports.

A coroner's report released today, Friday, blames a drug overdose for the death Kayla Moore, the 41-year-old transgender resident of Berkeley who died in Berkeley police custody in Februrary, according to news reports. 

The report from the Alameda County Coroner's bureau said the death was accidental and that contributing factors were obesity and an enlarged heart, according to Berkeleyside and the Daily Californian.

The report cited "toxic" levels of methamphetamine and codeine in Moore's blood, Berkeleyside reported.

Police responded on Feb. 12 to reports of a disturbance at the Gaia apartment building on Allston Way where Moore lived. Moore stopped breathing after being taken into custody. 

Some protesters demanding information about the death and police accountability held a demonstration at Old City Hall and clashed with police at the Berkeley City Council meeting Tuesday night.
