Car Chase Ends at Berkeley BART Station

A driver who ran a stop sign in East Oakland on Friday night led California Highway Patrol officers on a chase that ended near the Ashby BART station in Berkeley, a CHP spokesman said Saturday.

The pursuit began around 7 p.m. when a driver in a sedan failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Golf Links Road and Castlewood Street, according to Oakland-area CHP spokesman Sean Wilkenfeld.

Officers gave chase as the driver sped onto westbound Interstate Highway 580, he said.

CHP helicopters continued the chase overhead, allowing officers to stop the roadway pursuit in the interest of public safety.

The suspect, who was accompanied by a passenger, drove onto state Highway 24 and exited at Martin Luther King Junior Way.

The driver took a few turns before coming to a stop near the intersection of Ellis and Prince streets and abandoning the car on foot, Wilkenfeld said.

Berkeley police helped the CHP set up a perimeter around the area and officers were able to locate one man associated with the suspect car. He was arrested on suspicion of gun possession, the spokesman said.

He said he did not know whether the man arrested was the driver or passenger in the suspect vehicle.

The second suspect remains at large.
