Burglars Targeting Downtown Businesses in Berkeley

In an alert issued today, Thursday, Berkeley police urged downtown businesses to take extra precautions in the wake of a recent pattern of early morning commercial burglaries in the downtown area.

Berkeley police report a pattern of early morning burglaries recently of downtown businesses.

A Police Department alert issued today, Thursday, said, "Over the past few weeks, the Berkeley Police Department has noticed a pattern of commercial burglaries occurring in Downtown Berkeley. Mostly occurring between 1 am and 4 am, the burglar(s) are entering businesses by breaking a windows or doors."

The alert advised businesses, especially those on the Shattuck and University avenue corridors "to take extra care" and offered these recommendations:
  • Remember to secure all of your doors and windows
  • Not leave cash in the cash register
  • Consider leaving the cash drawer open (to show anyone looking inside the business that the cash register is empty)
  • Make certain your alarm system is active/armed
  • Make certain that your video surveillance system is activated and recording.
