Berkeley Police Log for Sept. 8-14, 2011

Incidents are compiled from reports referenced in the UC Berkeley Police Daily Activity Bulletin, the Berkeley Police Department's Community CrimeView interactive map and from other police reports.

Wednesday, Sept. 14

A young man was cited at Dwight Way and Telegraph Avenue about 12:35 a.m. for driving without a license.

Another young man was jailed for DUI at Durant Way and Bowditch Street about 1 a.m.

A student who didn't pay his $4 lunch check at the Golden Bear Cafe was reported to university authorities.

A backpack was stolen from 124 Morrison Hall and recovered minus $295 worth of its contents.

A wallet with $240 stolen in the Cesar Chavez Student Center wasn't recovered.

Someone stole two ladders worth $300 from a University Village resident's pickup truck.

A student who thought he'd lock his bike to an Evans Hall handrail was scolded about it. 

A student who locked his silver Specialized B18 bike to the bike racks found it gone, as did a woman who locked her grey 24-speed Specialized Cirrus men's hybrid bicycle to the racks at LeConte. Herewith some tips from Berkeley police on how to avoid this heartbreak.

A Chrysler stopped about 11:24 p.m. in the 2900 block of San Pablo Avenue proved to have several pieces of suspected crack cocaine on the seat, 6 grams of solid heroin, drug paraphernalia, $900 in cash, and 24.54 grams of suspected powder heroin under the seat of the driver, an Oakland man on felony probation. A passenger, an Oakland woman, had an outstanding warrant and 6 grams of suspected cocaine hidden in her clothing.

A 52-year-old man was cited at Haas Pavilion for, in UCPD's words, "causing disturbances to the baseball team."

Tuesday, Sept. 13

An oddly behaving Berkeley man was arrested about 12:33 a.m. at California and Russell streets after police found suspected cocaine on his person.

A man who apparently spent the night in the Anna Head School was spoken to about it.

So was a fellow who did the same in the Bear's Lair. 

An Oakland woman learned that her pharmacy in the 2900 block of Telegraph Avenue had filled her Vicodin prescription for some unknown person claiming to be her. 

A young Oaklander who asked a bank in the 1800 block of Solano Avenue bank to cash a check for $2,147.19 perhaps forgot that when he’d gone in on a similar errand three days earlier, the bank staff had phoned the account holder, who had never heard of him. Fleeing into a handy green Acura, the Oaklander was picked up on Shattuck Avenue a few minutes later and arrested on two counts of forgery.

A student's white/green/blue 1991 Kawasaki Ninja Motorcycle, value $2000, was reported stolen from the Smyth-Fernwald motorcycle parking lot.

A campus employee's blue Nova Down Tube B21 bike, value $280, was stolen this morning from the Birge Hall bike racks, while another employee's black Scott Sportster P55 B24 vanished from the Recreational Sports Facility a few minutes later.

A 57-year-old gentleman was dislodged just before noon from Upper Sproul Plaza for release from jail when he is sober.

A campus worker complained that a toothless black man dressed in gray was trying to steal a backpack from 77E Haas Pavilion.

An elderly Asian couple was excluded from campus for seven days.

A student in B104 Stanley Hall chased off a man trying to steal his backpack.

The evening in bike thefts: a black Motobecane Vent Noir 15 speed , value $900, from Birge Hall about 9 p.m.; a black men's 21 speed Trek 820, value $269, from the west racks at Haas Business School about 10:20 p.m.; an almost identical Trek a few minutes later from the Manville Apartments.

Sometime during the evening, a backpack with a $1,500 MacBook Pro vanished from the student union.

A man was robbed at knifepoint of $10 in the People's Park restrooms.

In an unrelated incident, a man with Berkeley and Nevada County traffic and misdemeanor warrants was arrested a few feet away.  

Upon leaving a bar at Shattuck Avenue near Channing Way about midnight, a 22-year-old Oakland man was attacked by three men whom he later described as Middle Eastern, and who punched and kicked him until he surrendered his baseball cap, his brass knuckles and his iPhone. 

 

Monday, Sept. 12

Some time over the weekend, burglars broke the locks on storage trailers at a fenced-in construction site on Euclid Avenue and made off with thousands of dollars worth of copper wire, computers and power and hand tools. 

A man who hit somebody at Dwight Way and Regent Street at 9 a.m. was taken for psychiatric observation.

A campus employee who allegedly showed up at McCone Hall drunk at 9 a.m. was arrested and sent home.

A guy whose red Diamondback Edgewood bike was stolen from 2316 Haste Street over Labor Day weekend got around to reporting it. 

A drunken 54-year-old woman was picked up off the 2300 block of Telegraph around 4 p.m. and sent to jail to sober up.

Yet another bike was stolen from the Birge Hall racks, this time a silver Specialized Allez B21 road bike, value $500.

Sunday, Sept. 11

Three young men with no reason to be on Grinelle Path at 4 a.m. were told to get lost.

A  gray K2 Zed 2.0 men's 21-speed mountain bike was stolen overnight from the bike racks east of Evans Hall.

A vehicle window was smashed in the 60 block of Southhampton Avenue, and a purse taken.

Somebody cut a cable lock in the 2100 block of Shattuck Avenue and stole a bike.

A hoodie-clad man was seen hoisting a laptop through an open window about 7 a.m. in the 2400 block of Fulton Street.

A blond guy in his 30s was seen stealing a Volvo about 10 a.m. from the 1800 block of Arch Street.

Around the same time, a 1994 Jeep Cherokee vanished from the 1800 block of Bancroft Way, while a white Plymouth minivan was stolen from the 2300 block of Bancroft three hours later.

However, a 1996 Civic was recovered at Fulton and Prince streets.

A 19-year-old student was creeped out this afternoon by the 40ish man following her around Sproul Plaza.

A fiftyish man wielding a 2x4 divested another of wires and a sledgehammer about 2 p.m. on Second and Virginia streets.

People slashed convertibles in the 2100 block of Emerson Street and the 3000 block of Harper Street, but didn't take anything.

A musical thief or thieves smashed a vehicle window in the 2800 block of California Street and stole a drummer's cymbals.

Somebody stole a maple plant from a home in the 1300 block of Spruce Street.

Two bikes were stolen within 20 minutes this afternoon by lock-cutting thieves on the 1900 block of University Avenue.

Somebody helped him- or herself to $20 from the till of a business in the 1900 block of University.

A laptop was left unattended for a moment in the 2500 block of Bancroft Way, and it soon disappeared.

A stolen 1998 Honda Civic was reported recovered in the 2400 block of Cedar Street.

Somebody cheated the lock of a vehicle in the 2700 block of Wallace Street and removed the stereo.

Somebody pried open a car door on the 1300 block of Rose Street and stole the stereo and an iPod.

The auto thieves in the 2000 block of Kittredge cleaned someone out, smashing a window and stealing a bag, money and clothing.

A Solano Stroll vendor's cash box was stolen by two light-fingered teenagers in the 1700 block of the avenue.

Afternoon bike thefts: black/gray GMC Topkick from the Bear's Lair; silver/black Bridgestone RB2 ($1,500) from Evans; blue/gray Mountaindeck from Wheeler; white/red Trek mountain bike ($600) from the southwest racks at Wurster.

On the other hand, a Mongoose Crossway Men's 21-speed mountain bike was found about 7 p.m. in the Eucalyptus Grove. UCPD has it if you can prove it's yours.

Seven outstanding traffic warrants earned a 64-year-old man in a Dwight Way parking lot a trip to jail.

The door of a home in the 2500 block of Hillside Avenue was left open, and a laptop walked through it.

Same thing happened in the 3100 block of College Avenue, except that the burglar also took money. 

A man seen smashing a window of a home in the 600 block of Santa Rosa Way about 2:25 p.m. was frightened off before he could steal anything.

Somebody smashed a vehicle window in the 100 block of Avenida Drive about 6 p.m., but didn't take anything.

A vehicle was left unlocked in the 2500 block of Chilton Way, and someone stole a knife. 

The lock was cut on a business at Glendale and La Loma avenues, but the burglar didn't take anything. 

A student was walking through Sproul Plaza about 8 p.m., when someone in a hoodie made off with her $1,350 shoulder bag and contents.

Saturday, Sept. 10

Laptops and a cell phone walked through an unlocked door in the 2500 block of College Avenue shortly after midnight.

A kid, perhaps 18 to 20, was seen removing a laptop, an iPad and an iPod Touch through an unlocked door about 1 a.m. in the 2300 block of Warring Avenue.

A student left his green Honda Civic sedan, license 6GGF489, in the Clark Kerr Campus parking lot for a few days, and it was gone when he returned.

The rear license plate was stripped from a car in the 1000 block of Bancroft Way.

Someone tried to steal the roof rack from a vehicle in the 1300 block of Cornell Avenue.

A bike was left unlocked in the 2000 block of Shattuck Avenue, and soon it was gone.

A vehicle left unlocked in the 2300 block of McKinley Avenue was soon missing its stereo.

And someone who left his/her medication in an unlocked vehicle in the 1700 block of Parker Street is now in a pickle.

A man seen trying to break into a home in the 400 block of Spruce Street around 11 a.m. was arrested.

Times are tough: Someone stole the rear-view mirror from a vehicle in the 2500 block of Regent Street.

Cultured thieves acquired a rug, art and electronics about 2 p.m. from a home in the 80 block of Southhampton. 

A missing 1998 green Honda Civic was found in the 2400 block of Durant Avenue.

But a green Acura disappeared almost the same time from Derby and Etna streets.

Somebody pried open a vehicle in the 1800 block of Channing Way and stole an iPod.

A green G7 Electra bicycle, value $600, was stolen from Ida Sproul Hall.

A laptop walked through an open window in the 2300 block of Ellsworth Street.

A lab employee is not happy about the driver who hit his Audi in the parking lot.

A woman was robbed at gunpoint about 10:30 p.m. at Woolsey and Tremont streets.

Two teenagers who claimed to have a gun took someone's cellphone and iPod about 6:30 p.m. at Shattuck Avenue and Kittredge Street.

Seven Cheney Hall freshmen were briefed on California's drug laws.

Friday, Sept. 9

Couples, the hills above campus are not as secluded as they seem.

Seven people were arrested in a 1:47 a.m. melee in the 2200 block of Shattuck Avenue.

Someone stole $1941.34 worth of aluminum wire from the Lawrence Berkeley Lab.

The GPS system was removed from a Camry in the University Village parking lot.

The registration sticker was stripped from a vehicle in the 2100 block of Acton Street.

That yard statue in the 1500 block of Chestnut Street did not come to life and walk away by itself.

In Underhill Lot, a thief stole the entire car. Four-door silver 1996 Honda Civic, license 3RLL113, if you see it.

A slender thief squeezed through a cat door in the 1700 block of Stuart Street about 4 p.m. and took a camera, a laptop, an iPod and an MP3 player.

A man at Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street was arrested about 4 p.m. for possessing marijuana for sale.

A man grabbed an iPhone from someone at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Prince Street about 6 p.m.

A Clark Kerr Campus student mourns the loss of her purple Motobecane road bike.

An attempted sexual assault was reported about 9 p.m. at 2515 Hillegass Street.

The guys at Psi Upsilon left their door unlocked, and someone stole a laptop and bike.

About 11 p.m., a computer and boxes of jewelry exited through an open window of a home in the 2100 block of Emerson Street.

A 34-year-old woman tripped in the Greek Theater ivy and fell.

Thursday, Sept. 8

A man stopped at Bancroft Way and Fulton Street about 1 a.m. with a probation violation was arrested.

So was a man found in the Recreational Sports Facility garage at 1:45 a.m. with a probation record and burglary tools.

So was a man found lounging in front of the RSF nine hours later with no probation record or burglary tools but with six traffic warrants.

And so, close to midnight, was a People's Park denizen with six warrants and a probation record.

A student's MacBook laptop was stolen about 6 p.m. from 2525 Channing Way.

A computer was stolen this afternoon in the 1700 block of San Pablo Avenue. 

A guitar and computer left in an unlocked car in the 1700 block of Oregon Street were soon gone.

So were the purse and cash left in an unlocked car in the 2200 block of California Street.

A 1986 Toyota van is homesick for Keeler and Miller avenues.

Someone smashed a vehicle window in the 1500 block of Beverly Place and stole a stereo.

Somone cut a window screen in the 2000 block of Del Norte Street and stole cash, a passport and a handgun.

Laptops and a camera walked through an open window in the 2700 block of Prince Street.

Somebody drank herself sick enough in front of Haas Business School to require hospitalization.

The plane of wet concrete proved irresistable to an employee would-be artist with a multitool.
