Berkeley Police Log for Oct. 6-12, 2011

Incidents are compiled from reports referenced in the UC Berkeley Police Daily Activity Bulletin, the Berkeley Police Department's weekly calls-for-service log and from other police reports.

Wednesday, Oct. 12

A shop in the 2000 block of University Avenue was denuded overnight of 50-60 pieces of jewelry adorning its walls by a thief or thieves who hurled a chunk of concrete through the plate-glass door.

A 40ish man was seen tampering with a bicycle on Kula Gulf Way this morning.

A student whose laptop was stolen at Rochdale Village last month got around to reporting it.

Somebody had the nerve to write graffiti on a flyer at Boalt Hall.

A black Trek mountain bike, value $400, was stolen this afternoon from the north side of the Genetics and Plant Biology building.

A 33-year-old man who could not satisfactorily account for his presence in the Unit 2 dorms was escorted to the Berkeley city jail.

UC police hung around West Crescent for an hour this evening to see how many bicyclists would ride past without lights. Answer: 18.

Homeowners in the 2200 block of Fifth Street who left their front door open for their contractor this afternoon were upstairs when someone else came in and stole a laptop from a room on the first floor.

Tuesday,  Oct. 11

Three people who apparently spent the night in the Anna Head School were spoken to about it.

A $2,000 Dell desktop computer was stolen from 253 Cory Hall.

Officers were surprised at how agitated and confrontational the speeding driver was whom they stopped this morning in the 2500 block of Benvenue, until they found the bindle of powder cocaine in his fist. 

A hit-and-run driver smashed into a Mini Cooper this afternoon in Strawberry Canyon at 2:38 p.m. No injuries were reported.

A student's roof rack was stolen from his car parked on Smyth Road.

UC police hung around West Circle for an hour this evening to see how many bicyclists would run the stop sign. Answer: 20.   

A man in the 2700 block of Matthews Street left home for three hours this evening with his kitchen window unlocked, and a burglar escorted his iPod Touch out the front door. 

A 49-year-old convicted sex offender was arrested on campus about 9:45 p.m.

Monday, Oct. 10

Emergency crews rescued someone from the I-House elevator.

A woman checking her credit card activity was amazed to learn that she had spent 389.83 euros at a shop in Chile earlier the same day.

A woman who parked her 2011 Jeep in the 700 block of Hearst Street about 6 p.m. returned two hours later to find the rear passenger window smashed and a backpack and laptop gone.

A student reported her tan Giant Cypress G21 bike, value $350, stolen from the Latimer Hall racks about 7 p.m.

A 20-year-old man robbed at gunpoint at 9:15 p.m. on the 2700 block of Haste Street was able to describe the getaway car to police, who stopped it full of his stolen stuff and arrested the four people inside. 

A 60-year-old man loitered on Barrows Hall's sixth floor.

Sunday, Oct. 9

About 2 a.m., someone pried open the window of a home in the 1900 block of Eldorado Avenue and took an Xbox, a safe, a digital camera and a .22-caliber handgun.

A woman was arrested at Hearst and Milvia streets at 4:23 a.m. on suspicion of drunken driving.

A Slottman Hall resident thinks another student stole $1,755 worth of her stuff.

Someone on the 30 block of Brookside Avenue went to his/her unlocked car in the morning to find a jacket and coins gone.

Three wallets and two iPhones were stolen from a Haas Pavilion locker room.

A white 1999 Nissan Sentra vanished from the 1700 block of Francisco Street. 

A man accused of helping himself to the GPS in an unlocked car in the 2800 block of Grant Street was arrested about noon.

Around the same time, a car window was smashed in the 400 block of University and a purse taken. 

Someone had the keys who shouldn't have to the electric scooter in the 1800 block of Woolsey Street.

Someone smashed a vehicle window in the 1200 block of Woolsey, apparently for the hell of it. 

A man in his 50s stole a comic book from a store in the 2000 block of Shattuck Avenue.

A bike left unattended about 10:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of University Avenue disappeared.

Saturday, Oct. 8

Two men clobbered someone in the head at Channing Way and McKinley Avenue at 12:40 a.m. and made off with his or her wallet.

A short, bespectacled white man was seen trying to steal a laptop through an open window in the 2500 block of Benvenue Avenue at 1:35 a.m.

Someone siphoned gas from a vehicle this morning in the 1500 block of Oregon Street.

Someone early this morning tried to remove the wheel from a vehicle parked in the 200 block of Marina Boulevard, but succeeded only in prying off the hubcap.

On the same block, about the same time, and with the same level of aptitude, a person angling to steal a whole lot of stuff from another car was interrupted in the attempt.

The lock was found cut that kept a Trek 850 bike at its rightful home on the 1200 block of Hearst Avenue.

A GPS left in an unlocked car in the 1200 block of Francisco Street was stolen.

A black Murray 17 speed bike was stolen this afternoon from Barker Hall.

An iPad left unattended in the 1600 block of Hopkins Street about 5 p.m. was gone.

A campus employee's wallet and $392 worth of stuff was stolen about the same time from the Life Sciences Addition.

A red 1995 Nissan Sentra misses its forever home in the 2200 block of Parker Street.

A vehicle window was smashed about 8 p.m. in the 1700 block of Fourth Street, and a bag was taken.

About 10 p.m. a red Univega bike was stolen from the Etcheverry Hall racks.

Friday, Oct. 7

A new $700 McCau electric bicycle left overnight near University Hall wasn't there in the morning.

Neither was a yellow Giant Ranier bike left unattended in the 1700 block of California Street.

The day in campus bike thefts: a chartreuse Marin mountain bike was stolen from the Unit 2 dorms about 10 a.m.; a black/red Specialized Hardrock was stolen about 1 p.m. from east of O'Brien Hall; and a black Schwinn mountain bike vanished soon after from the Unit 2 bike shed.

Someone took the phone and charger from an unlocked car in the 3200 block of Boise Street.

A locker was left unlocked in the 800 block of Potter Street, and a backpack walked away.

A campus employee's backpack and laptop were stolen this morning from Doe Library.

A 14-year-old found in People's Park with marijuana who apparently gave police some attitude about it was packed off to his parents.

Someone who wanted coffee enough to steal it from a store in the 1500 block of Shattuck was arrested.

Someone who wanted 200 feet of copper wiring enough to steal it from the Lawrence Berkeley Lab was not.

Gift cards left this morning on the porch of a home in the 3000 block of Avalon Avenue were spirited away.

The garage door opener was taken from an unlocked garage in the 500 block of Boynton Avenue.

Two vehicle windows were smashed between 1 and 2:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Seawall Drive and laptops and wallets stolen.

Another vehicle window smashed about 9 p.m. in the 1900 block of Fourth Street yielded a briefcase and suitcase.

Thursday, Oct. 6

A gunman held up a business in the 800 block of University Avenue about 1 a.m., making off with the cash box and the employees' wallets.

Police are pretty sure they know who stole the flute and the violin from the 1700 block of Prince Street.

A car window was smashed this morning in the 1500 block of Sacramento Street, and a laptop and stereo were stolen.

A vehicle in the 1300 block of Bonita Avenue was stripped of its front license plate.

Someone was arrested for shoplifting a bunch of stuff this evening from a store in the 1500 block of Shattuck Avenue.

Someone charged $400 worth of stuff to a credit card stolen from the Foothill-7 study room.

A 2004 Acura was broken into this afternoon in the Botanical Garden lot, and $75 worth of stuff taken.

In separate incidents, two more students ran out on their meal tabs at the Golden Bear Restaurant.

A student lounging with three classmates in Memorial Glade at 11:48 p.m. resented having their nudity made a subject of discussion.

Someone was robbed at gunpoint of his wallet about 11 p.m. in the 2700 block of Webster Street.

Another man, this one with a bandana over his face, robbed someone at gunpoint just before midnight at MLK Jr. Way and Cedar Street.
