Berkeley Police Log for Nov. 3-9, 2011

Incidents are compiled from reports referenced in the Berkeley Police Department's weekly calls-for-service log, the UC Berkeley Police Daily Activity Bulletin and other police reports.

Thursday, Nov. 10

A woman robbed of her EVO phone about 9 a.m. while walking-and-texting near Shattuck Avenue and Bancroft Way followed her assailant down the street, demanding her phone back, until police alerted by a witness who called 911 stopped the man and arrested him for robbery.

University of California police , most of them shortly before 10 p.m. after they refused to disperse for the night. All were booked at Berkeley City Jail or the North County Jail on charges including resisting arrest and unlawful assembly or entry; two of the 38 face additional charges of battery to a police officer. A man who parked his car in the 1800 block of West Street for a few days returned to it at 3 p.m. to find it broken into and his iPod Touch gone.

Someone cut the lock to the shed of a business in the 1200 block of Gilman Street and stole two bikes -- one a tandem style -- and a child's half-size violin.

Tuesday, Nov. 8

A Cal student who stepped out for a study break in the 2400 block of Piedmont Avenue at 4:20 a.m. was beaten with a metal pipe by three men incensed that he had nothing they could steal. He was treated at a hospital for pain in his ribs,  swelling on one forearm and scratches.   

A man who parked and locked his 2008 silver Yamaha motorcycle Monday night in the 1400 block of University Avenue returned in the morning to find it gone.

So did a 2008 silver Yamaha motorcycle from the 1400 block of University.

A man who works in the 2900 block of San Pablo does not desire to prosecute the reeking drunk who lurched into his store this afternoon, punched him, lurched out and then staggered into the street to yell at the oncoming traffic.  

Monday, Nov. 7

A man in the 2400 block of Piedmont was awakened at 3:20 a.m by the unexpected sound of someone trying to open his sliding-glass door. He pulled the blinds open to find a white man in a beanie, whom he scared away.

The lock of a Concord woman's Honda Civic was cheated during the noon hour in 1700 block of Fourth Street, and her Garmin Nuvi GPS and power cord disappeared.

About the same time, a Daly City man's Ford Escape was broken into at Second and Virginia streets and his Dell laptop and miscellaneous tools, including a DeWalt brand angle grinder and drill, were gone. 

An Apple MacBook was stolen during the noon hour from 321 Koshland Hall. 

Sunday, Nov. 6

The Haas Pavilion basketball court was flooded by firefighters' efforts to put out a late-night blaze some lowlife started in a men's-room paper-towel dispenser. 

A middle-aged man was seen prying the lock of a business in the 900 block of Murray Street about 2:40 p.m., absconding with a bag, jumping into a red Mitsubishi Mirage (license plate 3UXL337) and driving off.

A vehicle in the 1500 block of Lincoln Street is missing its catalytic converter.

A man caught trying to climb a ladder into a home on the 10 block of Tanglewood Road this afternoon was arrested.

A young man walking and talking on his IPhone on Channing Way near Ellsworth about 7:10 p.m. was accosted from behind by someone who grabbed his phone and fled into a waiting SUV. 

A gold Honda Civic was stolen from the 1100 block of Spruce Street.

Saturday, Nov. 5

A Chilton Alley denizen was found to have nine Berkeley traffic warrants, a felony warrant out of Illinois and, police said, narcotics. 

Two men, one with a gun, demanded someone's cellphone at Dana Street and Durant Avenue at 9:25 p.m. and got it. 

A football fan learned that this year's drunk tank is in the San Francisco City Jail.

A bike vanished from an unlocked vehicle in the 3200 block of Ellis Street.

Someone who left his or her laptop unattended for a moment in the 2100 block of Vine Street is very lucky that the would-be thief was caught.

Another catalytic-converter theft, this time from the 2800 block of College.

A briefcase seen in a vehicle in the 900 block of Jones Street proved irresistable to someone with means to smash the window.

Hard drives and cash walked through the unlocked door of a home in the 1800 block of Sacramento Street. 

Friday, Nov. 4

A fortyish man surprised late this morning in his attempt to shoplift condoms from a store in the 1000 block of Gilman Street pulled a knife on his discoverer, then fled.

A sexual assault was reported about 5 p.m. in the 2000 block of Kittredge Street.

A bicycle-riding thief grabbed a woman's purse about 11:30 p.m. at College Avenue and Russell Street.

A 1991 Honda Accord is homesick for the 1200 block of Oxford Street.

Just like a 1990 grey Civic is homesick for the 1100 block of Arch Street.

And a 1996 grey Saturn is homesick for the 1700 block of Walnut Street.

While a 1991 white Accord has vanished from the 200 block of Hillcrest Road.

Those traffic barricades at Ashby and Benvenue avenues did not walk away by themselves.

Somebody cheated the lock of a vehicle in the 800 block of Contra Costa Avenue and stole stuff including an iPod, tools and cash.

Someone smashed the window of a business in the 2400 block of LeConte  and stole a laptop.

The door to a home in the 1400 block of Parker was left open, and a laptop and some rings walked through it. 

The day in bike thefts: from the 2900 block of Otis Street; from Milvia and Virginia streets; the 2700 block of Hillegass Avenue; from Harold and Allston ways; and from a garage in the 2400 block of Bonar Street.

On the other hand, a maroon G-10 Univega road bike was found near the Hearst Field Annex. UCPD has it if you can prove it's yours. 

A 55-year-old woman rummaging in an I-House dumpster was spoken to about it.

Thursday, Nov. 3

Somebody stole two back-flow preventers, value $1,000, from Chancellor Birgenau's house.

Somebody kicked and beat somebody else about 9:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of Russell Street. Police are pretty sure they know who did it. 

Someone in the 2300 block of Shattuck Avenue was arrested this morning for shoplifting.

Bikes were taken from from the 2400 block of Dana Street and from an unlocked auto in the 2500 block of San Pablo Avenue.

A vehicle at Channing Way and Roosevelt Avenue was stripped of its catalytic converter. 

Vehicles in the 800 block of Carleton Street and the 2400 block of LeConte Avenue are missing their rear license plates, while a vehicle in the 1100 block of Sterling Avenue is missing its front one.

At LeConte and Hearst Avenue, someone stole the whole vehicle -- a 1991 Toyota pickup.

Also stolen was a grey Acura in the 2500 block of Parker Street.

An iPhone was left in a car this evening in the 2100 block of Fourth Street, and someone smashed the window and took it. 

Same thing happened to a purse and other goodies left in a car in the 2300 block of Prince Street.

Businesses were robbed of computers in the 2900 block of College Avenue and the 2300 block of Fourth Street.
