Berkeley Police Log for May 8-15, 2011

Incidents are compiled from Berkeley Police Department reports referenced in the department's Community CrimeView interactive map.

Sunday, May 8

Disturbances were reported on the 1200 block of Gilman Street, the 2100 block of Grant Street and the 2300 block of Telegraph Avenue.

Thefts of property valued under $950 were reported on the 1800 block of Alcatraz Avenue and the 700 block of Heinz Avenue.

A home on the 1700 block of Tenth Street was reported burglarized at 11:30 a.m.

Vandalism was reported on the 2100 block of Blake Street.

Vehicles were reported stolen from the 1500 block of Oxford Street, the 2400 block of Ellsworth Street (a green '83 Honda Accord), the 900 block of Heinz Avenue, the 1200 block of Rose Street and the 2600 block of College Avenue.

People stole stuff from vehicles at the corner of Dwight Way and College Avenue and in the 2300 block of Valley Street.

Monday, May 9

Police are pretty sure they know who clobbered somebody with a bicycle lock just after midnight at the corner of Bancroft Way and Shattuck Avenue, levying head injuries that sent the victim to the hospital. The victim has since been released, and is not saying much about what happened.

Somebody stole a motorized wheelchair from a home in the 1600 block of Grant Street.

A door was left unlocked at Emerson School on Forest Avenue, and someone stole a laptop. The burglar who stole the laptop from the 3300 block of King Street, however, had to smash a window; the culprit of the laptop theft from the 2300 block of Channing Way removed a window screen. 

A door was kicked open in the 600 block of Santa Rosa Avenue, and a laptop and camera stolen.

Someone was forcibly robbed of his/her laptop during the noon hour at the corner of Dana Street and Channing Way.

An iPod was taken from an unlocked car on the 2300 block of Valley Street.

Disturbances were reported on the 1500 block of Tyler Street.

Domestic violence was reported at the 2700 block of California Street and the 2800 block of Sacramento Street.

Wallet thefts were reported on the 2100 blocks of Oxford Street and Shattuck Avenue.

Outgoing mail was stolen from a home at 1541 Cedar.

Vehicles were stripped of their catalytic converters on the 2100 block of 8th Street and the 2700 block of 9th Street; other stuff was stolen from vehicles in the 3100 block of California Street and the 1400 block of Bancroft Way. A 1985 Nissan in the 1200 block of Rose Street was stolen altogether, as were a 1993 Accord in the 2600 block of College Avenue, a 1993 Civic from the 2100 block of Jefferson Avenue and a 1989 Toyota from the corner of Russell and Ellsworth streets. 

Somebody left his/her keys in the car while visiting the Berkeley Public Library on Kittredge Street, and upon return the keys were gone.

Narcotics violations were reported at 2 a.m. in the 2600 block of Dwight Way.

Vandalism was reported on the 1500 block of Hopkins Street and the 1200 block of Evelyn Avenue.

Tuesday, May 10

Someone stole an expensive laptop that had been left unattended in the 2100 block of Oxford Street.

Domestic violence was reported in the 1200 block of Haskell Street.

A disturbance was reported in the 2600 block of Dwight Way.

Narcotics violations were reported at 3:50 a.m. in the 2500 block of Telegraph Avenue, at 7:01 a.m. in the 2200 block of Bonar Street  and at 7:05 a.m. in the 1000 block of Francisco Street.

Somebody filched an unknown amount of money from the till at Yali's Cafe at 1920 Oxford Street.

Vandalism was reported in the 1500 block of Bonita Avenue and the 2100 block of Sacramento Street.

Thefts of backpacks, laptops and wallets valued under $950 were reported from the 1000 and 1900 blocks of Oxford Street, the 2300 block of Telegraph Avenue and the 800 block of Dwight Way.

A vehicle at 827 Arlington Ave. is now missing its catalytic converter, and a vehicle on the 2300 block of Tenth Street is missing a face plate.

Wednesday, May 11

Times are tough: A house in the 1100 block of Glen Avenue was stripped of its copper tubing.

The door was left open at the Berkeley Montessori School, and somebody stole laptops and a wallet. 

Somebody at Maybeck High School wasn't watching his/her laptop, and it, too, was stolen.

A bright yellow 1981 Toyota pickup was stolen from the 1300 block of Spruce Street and recovered in Richmond not long afterward. 

A felony theft (of property valued at more than $950) was reported in the 1300 block of University Avenue at 6 p.m.

Burglars who are home-improvement-minded, or else own a smelter, stole a brass railing from a dwelling in the 1000 block of Spruce Street while its residents were gone. Perhaps for similar reasons, a dwelling in the 1200 block of Josephine Street is missing a copper railing, and someone on the 1000 block of Oxford Street is missing a metal flower pot.

Someone stole items from a dwelling on the 1600 block of Derby Street.

Items valued under $950 were stolen from the 3000 block of Adeline Street, the 1200 block of Josephine Street.

Stuff was stolen from a vehicle in the 1700 block of Bancroft Way.

Vandalism was reported in the 2500 block of Durant Avenue and the 2300 block of Howe Street.

Someone reported a robbery at 5:35 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Channing Avenue.

Narcotics violations were reported at 9:30 p.m. at Adeline Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, just before midnight at University and San Pablo avenues and for the second night in a row in the 2200 block of Bonair Street.

Thursday, May 12

The street sign at LeRoy and Hilgard avenues did not walk away by itself.

A robber threatened an iPhone owner at the corner of Ellis and Woolsey streets with a gun just before 10 p.m. and took the iPhone.

A tan Honda Civic was stolen from the 2400 block of Ninth Street.

Items valued under $950 were stolen from the 1800 block of Fourth Street, the 1500 block of Shattuck Avenue and the 1600 block of University Avenue.

Times are tough No. 2: Someone siphoned gas from two vehicles parked in the 2600 block of Buena Vista Way. 

A disturbance was reported at 3:44 a.m. at San Pablo Avenue and 63rd Street.

Domestic violence was reported at 7 a.m. on the 3300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Someone stole items from a dwelling on the 3200 block of Idaho Street.

Someone shoplifted makeup from the MAC store on Fourth Street. 

Property was reported stolen from a vehicle in the 1800 block of Curtis Street.

Someone reported vandalism in the 2200 block of Ninth Street.

Friday, May 13

Someone made off with part of the inventory of Serendipity Books on University Avenue.

A 1991 teal Honda Accord was stolen from the 1400 block of Fifth Street.

Vandalism was reported on the 2600 block of Durant Avenue. 

The person or persons who tried to steal the catalytic converter from a vehicle parked at Grant and Cedar streets about 4:30 p.m. were foiled in the attempt. At least three other vehicle owners this week weren't so lucky. 

Residents left the key in the door of their place at Bonar Street and University Avenue, tempting whomever opened the door and stole a bike.

Saturday, May 14

Keys stolen from a school in the 2700 block of King Street enabled someone to steal laptops, while only an unlocked door stood between a burglar in the 2700 block of Haste Street and the laptop now missing there.

A strong-arm robber on Derby Street and College Avenue divested someone of his/her credit cards around 7:30 p.m.

The key in the ignition of a white Infiniti parked on Ward Street was broken, and its owner found the car gone in the morning.

A blue Ford Taurus is stolen from the corner of Rose and Walnut streets.

During a house party in the 1600 block of Bancroft Avenue, people stole stuff.

Sunday, May 15

A 2004 Subaru Forester was reported stolen from the 1400 block of Stannage Avenue around 9:30 p.m., and a 1991 Honda Accord is missing from the 1500 block of Virginia Street.

Checks were stolen from a mailbox in the 2600 block of Benvenue Avenue.
