Berkeley Police Log for Jan. 5-11, 2012

Incidents are derived from reports referenced in the UC Police Daily Activity Bulletin, the Berkeley Police calls-for-service log and other reports. The BPD items are from a police-provided sample of the 375+ calls the force receives each week.

Thursday, Jan. 12

The inebriated young driver of a Honda CRV had the very bad luck to be drifting in and out of a lane on Shattuck Avenue that she shared with a Berkeley police officer at 2:37 a.m.

The glove compartment of a van in the 2800 block of Dohr Street was rifled through by a thief who stole coins and made a mess.

Wednesday, Jan. 11

A 52-year-old man with no real reason to be on the fifth floor of Tolman Hall was found to have a probation violation and carted to jail.

A gentleman who spent the night at Anna Head School was spoken to about it.

Police looked around McCone Hall (see Thursday and Friday, below) to see if anyone was getting ready to steal anything.

A fellow was arrested at 2511 Channing Way for carrying a bunch of weed and getting lippy to the officer who spoke to him about it.

A woman talking on the phone while walking on Haste toward Ellsworth streets about 6 p.m. was approached by a man on a bike who grabbed the phone from her hand.

A gentleman with an outstanding no-bail drug warrant was escorted shortly before 3 p.m. from Shattuck and Durant avenues to jail.

A Richmond who inadvisedly drew attention to himself by riding his bike on the sidewalk of San Pablo Avenue, then running away when officers noticed him, was found to have 14 individually wrapped pieces of crack cocaine bundled in a bag.  

Tuesday, Jan. 10

Tweve feet of copper pipe meant for a disabled-access railing was neatly severed overnight from a restaurant in the 1500 block of Shattuck Avenue. 

An 83-year-old woman learned that someone had opened a $5,000 line of credit in her name, as well as a charge account at Macy's.

A backpack with $1,630 worth of stuff disappeared from Minor Hall.

Somebody charged $4,000 to somebody else's BluCard.

A lecturer in Cal's writing program sued for his civil right to solicit sex in the Dwinelle Hall men's restrooms.

A woman in the 2000 block of Hearst Avenue who hadn't deadbolted her door that morning returned about 5:40 p.m. to find her home ransacked and an Apple laptop, iPod, coins and jewelry missing.

People saw a mountain lion  in front of 3030 Smyth Road at 10:14 p.m.

Cory Hall was left unlocked.

Monday, Jan. 9

Two neighboring garages were burglarized overnight on the 1400 block of Holly Street. In each case, the thief or thieves had cut the lock and stolen bicycles:  a blue Giant Cypress DX men’s road bike, a grey Trek 7100 women's road bike and a green Raleigh Detour 4.5 women’s road bike in one case, and a black and silver GT men’s mountain bike in the other.

A man with a three-inch knife and a quantity of weed was arrested about 1 a.m. at 2515 Hillegass.

Someone who shouldn't have had a key to D60 Hildebrand Hall helped him- or herself to four laptops and an iPod worth $6,300.

Meanwhile, the ASUC is missing a $2,400 M3 Turbo Air freezer.

And 45 Hilgard Hall is down a computer monitor, iPod, textbooks and a key.  

A fellow who not only shoplifted beers at 10:41 a.m. from a store in the 3000 block of Telegraph but couldn't wait until he left the parking lot to drink them was arrested, stinking drunk, in said lot.

A 62-year-old San Francisco man was walking east on Woolsey toward Adeline streets, playing a word game on his iPhone when a man approached him from his right, hit him with a hard object in the mouth, grabbed the phone and fled east on Woolsey. The victim tried to chase his assailant, lost him in the BART parking lot near Tremont Street, and was taken to an ER with cuts on his mouth and temple.

Sunday, Jan. 8

An alleged gang member and a 15-year-old boy were arrested in a car at Centennial and Grizzly Peak Boulevard on weapons and probation-violation charges about 3:15 a.m.

Someone set fire to a Christmas tree left out at Shattuck Avenue and Kittredge Street.

Somebody smashed a window at Cory Hall overnight and ripped away a cabinet door in search of valuables. It's not clear what, if anything, was taken.

The license plates were stripped from a vehicle in the 1600 block of Bonita Avenue.

The catalytic converter was stripped from a vehicle in the 1900 block of Berryman Street.

A light-blue 1989 Camry was stripped from the 700 block of Grizzly Peak Boulevard. 

The GPS exited through a smashed vehicle window in the 2500 block of Regent Street.

And a white 1994 Civic is lonesome for the 2900 block of Benvenue Avenue.

A black Labrador retriever was found about 4:50 p.m. on the Upper Fire Trail on the Cal campus and taken to the Berkeley Animal Shelter. 

Saturday, Jan. 7

A gentleman with two Berkeley PD traffic warrants, two UCPD traffic warrants and a parole violation was escorted around 2 a.m. from 2401 Bancroft Way to the city jail.

An iPad left unattended at Shattuck Avenue and Derby Street soon disappeared.

Two transgendered black women left a shop in the 1700 block of Fourth Street with designer handbags they had not paid for. 

A bald guy stole shoes from a shop in the 1700 block of Shattuck.

Vehicles in the 800 block of Santa Barbara Road and the 2000 block of Kittredge Street were stripped of their rear license plates.

Papers were stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 1000 block of Creston Road, while on the same block, a toll-weary thief cheated a vehicle lock and stole the FasTrak device.

More vehicle burglaries: In the 900 block of Euclid, an auto was robbed of a camera and cash, a vehicle in the 2900 block of Magnolia lost cash and a GPS and a vehicle in the 2900 block of Linden Avenue is missing cash and sunglasses.

Thieves evidently alert to neighborhood renovation activities whisked a clawfoot tub, sink and chalkboard from the 1700 block of Sacramento Street.

A gold 1993 Lexus was stolen a few blocks south on Sacramento, while a 1997 Nissan Altima vanished from Euclid and Keith avenues.

Somebody smashed a vehicle window at Russell Street and MLK Jr. Way about 8 p.m. and stole a backpack.

Somebody crept in the unlocked bathroom window of a home in the 1700 block of Ashby Avenue and stole a laptop.

Somebody broke into a home in the 2100 block of Emerson to steal jewelry.

And somebody smashed a window of a home on Tunnel Road; it's not clear what, if anything, was taken.

Friday, Jan. 6

Apparently UC is so broke that it's a big deal if you charge your phone in an outlet at the Underhill Lot.

Somebody stole a $200 hard drive this week from 381 McCone Hall.

Somebody stole a purple Sony Workbook from D45 Hildebrand.

And somebody stole $98 worth of computer mice from 432 Evans.

A person who shoplifted something in the 2300 block of Shattuck was arrested.

Unattended stuff in the 2600 block of Parker, the 2200 block of Shattuck and the 2500 block of Sacramento soon disappeared.

A blue 1999 Acura Integra is homesick for the 2600 block of Virginia Street.

Tools were stolen from a vehicle in the 1700 block of Rose Street.

An apparently unattended Motobecane bike was stolen about 1 p.m. from the 2300 block of Eunice Street.

But the person who stole the bike in the 2000 block of Allston Way had to cut a cable lock.

Someone shoplifted booze on the 1800 block of University Avenue.

The rear kitchen window of a home in the 3100 block of Wheeler Street was smashed by someone who helped himself to a laptop, gaming system and games.

A person trying to break into an Acton Street home via the doggie door was unsuccessful.

Thursday, Jan. 5

Two young men and a woman were walking in the 2500 block of College Avenue about 1 a.m. when they were robbed at gunpoint by three men who grabbed their valuables and ran away.

The Lawrence Hall of Science parking lot only seems like a secluded place to make love.

A man beat somebody up at 6:30 a.m. near the Berkeley Marina and took away his coffee.

Someone reached into the unlocked window of a business in the 2400 block of Webster Street about 10:15 a.m. and stole a laptop. 

A Cal employee turned his back on his backpack and laptop for 15 minutes in Hearst Field Annex and that's all it took for them to disappear.

Someone was robbed at gunpoint at Ward Street and San Pablo Avenue at 1:18 p.m.

About an hour later, someone forced open the door of a home in the 1600 block of Ashby and stole three laptops.

The gate to a home in the 1100 block of Keith Avenue was forced open, but it doesn't look as if anything was taken. 

Big day in auto theft: A 1991 white Ford Escort station wagon is missing from Cowper and Byton streets, while a white 1989 white Accord has vanished from Poppy Lane, a 1996 Nissan Altima is gone from the 1700 block of Spuce Street, a blue 2009 Pontiac is gone from the 2500 block of Regent Street and a 1986 Nissan pickup is MIA from Chestnut and Hearst.

More McCone Hall theft: Somebody cut a lock in 269 McCone over winter break and helped him- or herself to a laptop and accessories worth $1,360.

An inebriated fellow with an Alameda County sheriff's warrant was picked up about 6:49 p.m. in Spieker Plaza and taken to jail.

Four people who attacked someone with a wooden stick at California and Cedar streets about 9 p.m. were arrested.
