Berkeley Police Log for Jan. 26-Feb. 2, 2012

Incidents are derived from reports referenced in the UC Police Daily Activity Bulletin, the Berkeley Police calls-for-service log and other reports. The BPD items are from a police-provided sample of the 375+ calls the force receives each week.

Thursday, Feb. 2

Police tried to find a hotel room for a fellow in the 1200 block of Berkeley Way whose girlfriend wished him off the premises, but he was so drunk that the hotel wouldn't take him. 

A 51-year-old bicyclist who matched the description of a serial garage burglar was spotted about 8:30 a.m. as he rode slowly down the 1100 block of Carleton Street, peering up driveways. Fleeing from officers, he was arrested soon after on Blake Street; a search warrant yielded what police described as burglary tools.

Wednesday, Feb. 1

A People's Park denizen was jailed on two Berkeley misdemeanor warrants about 12:30 a.m.

Three men in ski masks held up a liquor/convenience store in the 3000 block of Sacramento Street about 10:12 p.m., pistol-whipping a clerk and fleeing with cash.

An El Sobrante woman who parked her Toyota 4Runner for the day at Marin and Colusa avenues found its catalytic converter gone when she returned at 5:30 p.m.

A 75-year-old Delaware Street woman learned that someone had opened a Banana Republic account in her name and charged $300 worth of stuff.

Somebody charged $7,000 to a Li Ka Shing employee's BluCard.

Somebody vandalized a university truck with black spray paint.

Tuesday, Jan. 31

An 18-year-old Cal student was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A prowler apprehended on the 1700 block of Lincoln Street about 8:30 a.m. was found -- a relatively straightforward process because he was on searchable probation -- with a crack pipe, bicycle parts and tools for disassembling bikes in his possession.

Similar story unfolded about 11:25 p.m. near 8th Street and Bancroft Way, where the bicyclist was found with a meth pipe.

An unauthorized banner was unfurled from the eighth floor of Barrows Hall. Could mean the elevators are working.

A gentleman described by BPD as "a problematic individual particularly when intoxicated" was plucked stumbling drunk from San Pablo Avenue and Haskell Street to the city jail about 1:38 p.m.

A white 2003 Toyota Prius, license plate 6BIZ366, was stolen from Bancroft Way and Bowditch Street about 3:35 p.m.

Monday, Jan. 30

A rock was hurled through the Edible Schoolyard building in the 1700 block of Rose Street sometime over the weekend.

More auto burglary at the Lawrence Hall of Science! A 2003 Honda Odyssey minivan in the parking lot was broken into and $230 worth of stuff stolen between 10:30 and 11 a.m.

A People's Park denizen was arrested for violating probation and a court order about 12:40 p.m.

A Grass Valley man parked a rented 2012 Ford Escape laden with luggage in the 3000 block of Claremont Avenue about 12:45 p.m. and returned an hour later to find the bags gone.

A student's backpack and contents, including athletic shoes, was stolen from Tully's Coffee at the ASUC sometime between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.

About an hour later, a UC employee's backpack with $700 worth of his stuff was stolen from the ASUC Garage.

Sometime between 7 and 8 p.m., three young men in their teens or early 20s cut a window screen of a home in the 1500 block of Blake Street and stole a laptop and an Xbox before a neighbor saw them and scared them away.

An inebriated fellow knocking on a woman's door in the 1800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way just before midnight was ushered off to jail.

Sunday, Jan. 29

A man was picked up at 2470 Bancroft Ave. at 3:40 a.m. on suspicion of auto burglary.

A lock was found cut at Carleton and Fulton streets this morning and a bike stolen.

A vehicle window was smashed about 9 a.m. in the 500 block of University for the sake of the laptop inside.

Same thing happened during the noon hour near the Berkeley Marina for the sake of the purse inside.

A home in the 2100 block of Blake Street was broken into and a TV and guitar stolen.

Somebody left a laptop unattended for a moment this afternoon at Shattuck and University avenues, and it was soon gone.

Somebody left a laptop in his or her vehicle at College and Alcatraz avenues, and it disappeared, too.

A car was stolen about 6:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Heinz Avenue, but BPD didn't tell us what kind.

Someone strongarmed someone else out of his or her cell phone at Delaware Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way at 9:13 p.m.

The muffler and catalytic converter were stripped from a vehicle parked at Hillegass Avenue and Woolsey Street.

Four young men beat up a fifth young man this evening in the Eucalyptus Grove.

That street sign at Warring and Parker streets did not walk away by itself.

Saturday, Jan. 28

Three residents of the Unit 1 and 3 dorms drank themselves sick enough to require hospitalization.

The day in bolt-cutter-assisted bike thefts: in the 2300 block of Bonar Street about 3 p.m.; at Addiston and Browning streets about 5:30 p.m., and at 9th Street and University Avenue about 2:30 p.m., where a bike was stripped of parts.

In the 1800 block of Fourth Street, someone cabled his or her laptop to a piece of furniture, and it was still stolen.

The ignition of a car was punched in the 1500 block of Arch Street; the car was quickly recovered.

A Grant Street diabetic who left his or her EpiPen in the car overnight found a sea of smashed window glass where it had been.

Someone also smashed a vehicle window in the 1800 block of Cedar Street, but didn’t take anything. 

The smasher of the window at Durant and Bowditch took a backpack.

The backpack thief in the 1600 block of Capistrano Avenue, however, merely had to open an unlocked car door. 

A garage was broken into in the 1600 block of Visalia Avenue, but whatever was inside did not tempt the burglar to steal it.

Friday, Jan. 27

A black 1996 Nissan Maxima, license plate 6KCP349, was stolen from the Smyth-Fernwald apartments.

In the very same place, a white 1996 Nissan XE truck stolen in Pinole, license plate 8N71092, was found. UCPD has it if you can prove it's yours.

A gunman divested someone of cellphone, cash and other stuff about 9 p.m. in the 2300 block of Parker Street.

Same thing happened a few minutes later at Stuart and Ellsworth streets. 

A student's backpack, laptop and other stuff were stolen between 1 and 2:30 p.m. from 200 Eshleman Hall. 

Someone at College and Alcatraz avenues tried to rob someone about 6:30 p.m., but was unsuccessful.

The catalytic converter was stripped from a vehicle in the 1900 block of Oregon Street.

The owner of a vehicle at Sacramento and Fairview streets may have made one key too many.

A vehicle was stolen overnight in the 1500 block of Second Street. BPD didn’t tell us what kind. Write in and tell us if you know.

Auto burglaries reported at/near the Berkeley Marina: in the 10 block of Spinnaker Way about 7:30 a.m. and in the 100 block of Seawall Drive about 7 p.m.

Two Mathews Street homes two blocks apart were visited by burglars who took advantage of open windows between 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Nothing was taken at the home in the 2800 block, while the home in the 2600 block lost laptops.

The laptop thief in the 1100 block of Allston Way removed a window. 

The laptop thief in the 1200 block of Bancroft Avenue pried open a door.

Someone pried open a window of a home in the 2100 block of California Street and stole cash and jewelry. 

Thursday, Jan. 26

Barber Kenneth Warren, nephew of Berkeley icon Don Warren and father of five, was  as he went to visit friends at 2114 Emerson St. A $17,000 . More herehere and here

A Cal student was grabbed from behind on Telegraph and Durant avenues about 8:30 p.m. by a man who tried to pick his pockets. Police arrested a 31-year-old man nearby who matched the description of the suspect.

A wallet and cellphone were whisked in the early hours from an unlocked vehicle in the 1700 block of Russell Street.

A Secteur B24 road bicycle, value $1,100, was stolen this morning from the racks southwest of Dwinelle Hall.

A coffeemaker was shoplifted about 10 a.m. from the 2100 block of Shattuck Avenue.

A very vain thief stole whitening strips from the drugstore in the 2300 block of Telegraph Avenue.

The day in auto theft: a black 1991 Honda Accord from the 2900 block of Ellis Street and a dark-blue 1996 Accord from the 600 block of Arlington Avenue.

A vehicle window was smashed at 4:15 p.m. in the 900 block of Heinz Avenue and a bag, laptop and wallet taken.

Someone was strongarmed out of an iPhone at College Avenue and Channing Way about 7:15 p.m.

Same thing happened in the 1300 block of Harmon Street about 2 p.m.

Someone tried to strongarm someone at Claremont and Alcatraz avenues at 6 p.m., but was unsuccessful.

A Toyota was smashed into near the Botanical Gardens early this afternoon for the sake of $4 inside. 

A middle-aged white man roaming Moses Hall and unconvincingly claiming to be a Cal employee was asked to move along.

Two homes in the 1900 block of Chestnut Street were entered through unlocked doors or windows. Nothing was stolen from one; a lockbox, presumably with key inside, was taken from the second.

The door of a home in the 900 block was kicked open sometime during the day and computers, jewelry and a camera stolen.

A red Lambert B24 road bike, value $2,000, was stolen between 6 and 9 p.m. from the Leconte bike racks on campus.

The owner of the gray 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit last seen in UC Parking Structure A no doubt wishes he or she had paid those five parking tickets.
