Berkeley Police Log for Jan. 12-19, 2012

Incidents are derived from reports referenced in the UC Police Daily Activity Bulletin, the Berkeley Police calls-for-service log and other reports. The BPD items are from a police-provided sample of the 375+ calls the force receives each week.

Thursday, Jan. 19

A contractor arrived at his job site, a home in the 1600 block of Ward Street, to find that someone had climbed in an open rear window overnight and stolen two 48 x 48-inch skylights and three pieces of rolling aluminum scaffold. 

A driver speeding up Martin Luther King Jr. Way near Hearst Avenue about 2:35 a.m. was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .139 and to be on probation for a DUI offense.

Wednesday, Jan. 18

A driver who ran a red light at Alcatraz Avenue and Sacramento Street about 1:47 a.m. was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .215.

A young couple who pitched a tent overnight in the Smyth-Fernwald playground (hoping to see the , perhaps?) were spoken to about it.

Somebody charged $3,000 to somebody else's BluCard.

A middle-aged man finished his morning workout at the Recreational Sports Facility to find someone had stolen $350 worth of stuff from his day locker.

A student disturbed the peace that is California Hall at 11:23 a.m.

A 63-year-old man who hung an Occupy banner from the Campanile was arrested. Whoever did the same at Eshleman got away. Images here and here.

A San Lorenzo man who parked his Kia in a hardware-store parking lot in the 1000 block of Ashby Avenue about 6:30 p.m. returned 10 minutes later to find the rear driver’s side passenger side door was shattered and his backpack and contents were gone. 

A student's silver M21 mountain bike, value $400, was stolen from the racks outside Pimentel Hall. 

A Creston Road resident learned that someone had charged more than $600 to a BillMeLater.com account fraudulently opened in her name.

Tuesday, Jan. 17

A Cal student's laptop and camera were stolen overnight in Wellman Hall. Total loss $1,750.

A woman in the 3000 block of Hillegass Avenue found her car been broken into overnight and her iPod stolen.

I cannot improve on BPD’s telling of this tale -- Between 9 and 10:30 a.m., a Piedmont woman parked her Mercedes on The Uplands just east of Claremont Avenue. She placed her MacBook Pro under her fur coat in the back seat. When she returned, she saw that the right rear passenger window had been smashed and the laptop was gone. 

A Richmond man ordered by the courts to stay out of San Pablo Park was caught there nonetheless by BPD drug task force officers about 6:30 p.m. despite his discarding a loaded semi-automatic in an attempt to flee. Police booked him into the city jail on gun offenses, possession of marijuana for sale, resisting and obstructing officers and a felony probation violation.

A gunman held up the Chevron station at 3048 Ashby Ave. about 2 p.m.

A student ran out on his bill at the Golden Bear Market.

You wouldn't think anyone would steal a $75 bike. But they did, sometime today at the Unit 2 dorm courtyard.

Have you seen  using credit cards? Police say they're not hers.

Monday, Jan. 16

Sometime between midnight and 3 a.m., someone helped him- or herself to  $2,320 worth of Apple electronics from a Deutsch Hall dorm room.

The day in bike thefts: a blue men's 17-speed Raleigh Detour 3.5, value $350, from a Clark Kerr Campus dorm room; a bronze 12 speed Zebra road bike, value $170, from the Unit 1 dorms.

Those trusty Barrows Hall elevators tripped the fire alarms.

Sunday, Jan. 15

A 20-year-old Cal student was only a few steps from the Unit 2 dorm toilets, but chose not to use them.

A beige 1999 Acura was stolen from the 1000 block of Miller Avenue.

A garage door was left unlocked overnight in the 700 block of Santa Barbara Road, and bikes were stolen and vehicles rummaged through.

A men's 21-speed Diamondback Insight hybrid bicycle, value $400, was stolen some time between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. from a parking structure on Bancroft Way.

Somebody -- surprise! -- rifled an unlocked auto in the 900 block of Shattuck Avenue.

The thief of the car stereo in the 1900 block of Hopkins, however, had to smash the window.

A man at Allston and Harrold ways was picked up just before 11 p.m. on a $10,000 misdemeanor warrant out of Santa Clara County, while his companion was arrested on a probation violation.

The registration tabs vanished from a vehicle in the 3200 block of Sacramento Street.

Saturday, Jan. 14

Sometime between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., someone helped him- or herself to a Christian Hall resident's laptop.

A wallet and laptop were gone from an unlocked vehicle this morning in the 900 block of Grizzly Peak Blvd.

A gentleman who shoplifted his early-afternoon beer from a store in the 1800 block of University Avenue was arrested.

Someone looted a diamond ring from the 2100 block of Bonar Street.

A middle-aged man stole someone's backpack and laptop about 5 p.m. from the Bear's Lair on campus.

Two women's stuff was stolen at the Hellman tennis courts on campus about 4:30 p.m.

A young man with a gun grabbed someone's phone, iPod and backpack about 6 p.m. at Ashby Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Another armed man divested someone of a laptop and wallet about 6:25 p.m. at Russell Street and Shattuck Avenue.

But the 15-year-old gunman who snatched someone's cell phone at 2224 Prince St. a few minutes later was persuaded -- we'd love to know how -- to give it back.

Cash and a gift card vanished from an unlocked auto in the 2200 block of Tenth Street.

A bike was stolen from a yard in the 2100 block of Woolsey Street.

License plates were stripped from vehicles in the 2200 block of Stuart Street and the 2700 block of Wallace Street.

A cable was cut in the 2200 block of Tenth Street and a bike taken.

Those coveted Clinton-era Hondas just won't stay put: MIA today are a 1996 green Accord from the 2400 block of 10th Street and a 1997 gold Accord from the 1900 block of Eighth Street.

A white 2006 Highlander, meanwhile, has vanished from the 1400 block of Hopkins Street.

And a 1999 Discovery is missing from the 1600 block of University. 

Did whoever took the "No Trespassing" sign from 1600 Solano have to trespass to do it?

A gentleman hanging around the Anna Head School with a concealed weapon about 11:30 p.m. was escorted to jail. 

Friday, Jan. 13

A Berkeley resident is charged with  in the Union City school district where he used to teach.

A lock was cut in the 2000 block of Allston Way and a bike taken.

Ohlone Park only seems secluded at 1:45 a.m.

Six bikes were stolen, apparently overnight, from an unlocked garage in the 1500 block of Sacramento Street.

A 16-year-old allegedly enjoying weed in the Underhill parking structure on College Avenue was detained until his parents could come get him. 

Somebody stripped the copper wire from the light towers in the 700 block of Harrison Street.

A silver 1997 Accord is homesick for the 1300 block of Addison Street.

Someone smashed a car window on Spinnaker Way and stole stuff inside.

Same thing happened to someone who left a suitcase in a vehicle at Fourth Street and Hearst Avenue.

Also someone who left a purse in a vehicle at Avalon and Claremont avenues.

A really cheap thief, or else one who felt he could parlay parking privileges into a chance to steal even more stuff, pried a vehicle lock to steal the placard inside.

Thursday, Jan. 12

A woman standing outside Alta Bates Medical Center had an armed man rip the gold necklace off her neck about 1:30 p.m., the Daily Cal reported.

A 73-year-old man on parole was escorted from the courtyard of the Norton Hall dorms at 8:06 a.m.

A man in a skullcap and with a scarf over his face, no doubt hoping to look inconspicuous, broke down the back door of a business in the 2900 block of Seventh Street about 9:45 a.m. and took two laptops and a gift basket. 

The thief who took the laptop from the 1700 block of Solano in the afternoon, however, broke down the front door. 

Someone tried to break into a house in the 1400 block of 66th Street, but was unsuccessful.

Someone stole a $600 laptop from the North Reading Room of Doe Library.

The catalytic converter was stripped from a vehicle in the 1700 block of Ward Street.

Registration stickers were stolen from a vehicle in the 2800 block of Dohr Street.

In the 1600 block of Kains Avenue, the thieves stole the whole car, a 2000 Camry.

A rider in the 2300 block of Derby Street is very much missing a 2006 Pia scooter.

In the 2200 block of Dwight Way, a beige 1995 Nissan Altima no longer dwells.

A 19-year-old was picked up in People's Park for two $10,000 misdemeanor warrants out of Sonoma County.

Someone smashed a vehicle window at 10th and Gilman streets and stole stuff including a laptop and backpack.

Same thing happened at Benvenue Avenue and Stuart Street, except that what was taken was a GPS.

A Hildebrand Hall researcher reports someone tampering with his lab experiment.

A student's backpack and $650 worth of stuff were stolen from Haas Pavilion about 3:30 p.m.

A door was left open in the 1600 block of Addison Street about 6:30 p.m., and a laptop and WiFi card walked through it. 

A gentleman with a misdemeanor warrant out of the city of Covina was picked up at College and Durant avenues at 10:49 p.m.
