Berkeley Police Log for Dec. 8-14, 2011

Incidents are compiled from reports referenced in the Berkeley Police Department weekly log, the UC Police Daily Activity Bulletin and other reports. The BPD calls are from a police-provided sampling of the 375 calls the force receives each week.

Wednesday, Dec. 14

A student who turned his back on his laptop for five minutes in the Gardner Library main stacks turned around to find it gone.

Another student who evidently left his Nano and charger in Moffitt Library overnight returned in the morning to find it gone.

A 76-year-old man walking near Stuart Street and Benvenue Avenue about 10:50 p.m. was attacked from behind by two men who pushed him to the ground, punched him repeatedly in the face until he bled and stole his wallet. Paramedics took him to an emergency room for treatment of his injuries.

A 20-year-old man laden with luggage and an amplifier was walking in the 1800 block of Euclid Avenue about 11:20 p.m. when three or four men jumped out of a Clinton-era sedan and robbed him at gunpoint of his stuff. A nearby pedestrian whom they also tried to rob was less cowed by the gun or by a knife one of the robbers brandished, and ran away.

A $700 gold Allez Elite road bike was stolen overnight from the racks at the Unit 3 Ida Sproul dorm.

Across the way at Deutsch Hall, a Peeping Tom peeped.

Five People's Park denizens who broke curfew were spoken to about it. 

Tuesday, Dec. 13

Some guy liked the Tully's in Sproul Plaza so much that he refused to leave.

Some time between 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., thieves hit the Lawrence Hall of Science parking lot, smashing the windows of a 2010 Honda CRV and a 2009 Jeep Laredo and helping themselves to the purses and other goodies inside. 

A student had $1,550 worth of stuff stolen in Moffitt Library about 2:45 p.m., including his laptop, wallet and calculator. 

Another student parked her $900 custom-made 18-speed road bike outside Hearst Gym at 6:50 p.m. and found it gone three hours later.

A gentleman in UC Parking Lot 3 who had drug paraphernalia but no valid car registration was escorted to the Berkeley City Jail. 

Monday, Dec. 12

Somebody charged $1,263 worth of stuff to someone else's BluCard.

The day in campus bike theft: a $800 men's grey Soma Double Cross bike was stolen from the ASUC, while a $400 Jamis women's commuter bike was stolen from outside Donner Lab and a $550 Jamis Commuter 3.0 bicycle disappeared from outside the College of Environmental Design. 

$300 worth of books were stolen from 44B Giannini Hall over the weekend.

A Geo Tracker left in Strawberry Canyon with a window open had stuff missing from it when the owner returned. 

Sunday, Dec. 11

The receptor box was taken from an unlocked garage this morning in the 2800 block of Sacramento Street.

Somebody rifled through an unlocked car in the 1200 block of Colusa Avenue.

Tools were stolen this afternoon from a vehicle at Telegraph Avenue and Channing Way.

Bikes were taken from a yard in the 1800 block of Allston Way, from the 2500 block of Milvia Street, and from the garage of a home in the 1900 block of Chestnut Street.

The day in vehicle theft: a 1997 black Nissan Maxima from the 1000 block of Keith Avenue and a Piaggio from the 1100 block of Laurel Street.

Two vehicles in the 200 block of Marina Boulevard were broken into for the sake of the stuff inside.

A young man and a teenager tried to rob somebody at gunpoint at Cedar Street and Juanita Way at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 10

A woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint while walking alone in UC's Eucalyptus Grove about 3:30 a.m. She was treated at a hospital for her injuries. UCPD describes the attacker as "a Black male, 5’8” to 5’10” in height, 175 lbs. with a skinny build, short dirty hair, brown eyes (who) smelled as if he hadn’t bathed in a few days."

A blue 2001 Mazda Tribute minivan, license plate 6SNA864, was stolen overnight from Jackson Street in University Village.

A middle-aged Asian guy stole three chisels in the 1300 block of San Pablo Avenue.

The GPS system and papers were stolen from a vehicle in the 1000 block of Creston Road.

A vehicle at LaLoma Avenue and Ridge Road is missing its registration sticker.

Someone's iPhone was stolen in the Moffitt Library stacks about 4:40 p.m.

The day in vehicle burglary : A 2002 Toyota Highlander had its window smashed sometime between 3:35 and 5:10 p.m.; $350 worth of stuff was stolen, including a DVD player and DVDs. Sometime between 2 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. in the same lot, a 2012 Buick Lacrosse was broken into and an Apple MacBook left inside was gone. 

The trunk of a car was pried open in the 800 block of Hilldale Avenue and jewelry stolen.

Somebody slashed a convertible near 40 Alta Road for the sake of glasses and a datebook inside.

Somebody broke into a vehicle in the 1500 block of Hopkins Avenue and stole a purse.

The cable lock on a bike in the 2100 block of Shattuck Avenue did not stop a thief; nor did the metal bars between a thief and the bikes in the 1200 block of University Avenue.

A black 1997 Nissan Maxima was stolen from the 1200 block of Grizzly Peak Blvd, while a 1996 Honda Prelude was stolen from Dwight Way and Warring Street.

Friday, Dec. 9

It will be a sad Christmas for the family of a person who left the Christmas gifts overnight in the trunk of a car in the 1900 block of Blake Street.

A 29-year-old alleged drunken driver was arrested at 2100 Channing about 2:45 a.m.

Somebody drove into a water pipe in the ASUC Garage about 7:30 a.m., triggering fire alarms in the garage and the neighboring Cesar Chavez Student Center.

A necklace was stolen from a store display in the 1800 block of Fourth Street.

Two con men with apparent memory issues showed up on two consecutive days at an Addison Street home, claiming each time to be Comcast repairmen and being told each time that no service appointment had been made. When, on Friday, the resident asked for Comcast ID, they could produce none, and hastily drove away in an old white van whose license plate read, in part,  _6J4699_.

A package was stolen in the 1400 block of Virginia Street.

Tools disappeared from a truck bed in the 1200 block of Ninth Street.

A watch disappeared through an unlocked window in the 2200 block of Tenth Street.

Somebody left a duffle bag full of clothes in the 2200 block of McGee Avenue, and soon they were gone.

A commute-minded thief or thieves absconded with the FasTrak device from a vehicle in the 1600 block of Blake Street.

The front license plate is missing from a vehicle at Derby Street and College Avenue.

A 2000 Saturn was stolen from the 2800 block of Sacramento Street.

A student attempted to walk out on his lunch bill at the Golden Bear Restaurant.

A white Schwinn Trailway Hybrid bicycle, value $240, was stolen from outside Dwinelle Hall.

A guy walking two bicycles near Tolman Hall was spoken to about it. 

You think you'd be safe from theft in a library, but you'd be wrong: A black Lenovo Thinkbook was stolen from Moffitt Library; an iPad was stolen from the biz school library about 6 p.m.; and a student's iPhone was stolen from the Bechtel Hall library about two hours later.

Somebody stole $522 worth of lead from the UC hazmat facility. 

Thursday, Dec. 8

Mail was stolen in the 1800 block of Fourth Street.

A student's bike, helmet and lock were stolen from the racks west of the College of Environmental Design sometime between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Despite the cable lock, so was a bike at Shattuck Avenue and Addison Street.

A green 1998 Honda Civic, license plate 4BRX275, was stolen from the Underhill Lot on College Avenue.

A tattooed-bellied woman reached into another woman's purse in the 2400 block of Durant Avenue about 8 p.m. and stole her wallet.

An iPhone left in a vehicle in the 800 block of Regal Road was conspicuous by its absence at 5:28 p.m.

So were the laptop and iPad left in a vehicle in the 2800 block of Woolsey Street.

A 75-year-old lady reported that her purse had been stolen the night before at Haas Pavilion.
