Berkeley Police Log for Dec. 22-28, 2011

Incidents are derived from reports referenced in the UC Police Daily Activity Bulletin, the Berkeley Police calls-for-service log and other reports. The BPD items are a police-provided sample of the 375+ calls the force receives each week.

Wednesday, Dec. 28

Two homes on heavily wooded Miller Avenue near Grizzly Peak Drive were severely  this evening that spread to the surrounding brush. Firefighters were hindered when a power line fell on one of their trucks, forcing them to abandon the vehicle. Four firefighters were treated for injuries. Investigators . Video here and .

A second, unrelated fire caused by unextinguished smoking discards outside a bingo parlor at 1284 San Pablo Ave. was quickly put out.

A woman who parked her 2009 green Toyota Yaris at Avalon and Claremont avenues about noon returned 90 minutes later to find it gone.

A gentleman vomiting out the open door of his BMW at Solano and Colusa avenues at 1 a.m. prompted a witness to call police, who soon arrested him on suspicion of DUI.

Tuesday, Dec. 27

Some people in the 2400 block of Fulton Street who went to bed with the front door unlocked were awakened about 1:30 a.m. by two men stealing a laptop.

A woman who answered the door at a house in the 2700 block of Sacramento Street that has drawn drug-related complaints was found to have two warrants and a crack pipe in her pocket. 

It's especially unwise to run stop sign when you have a $40,000 warrant (out of Antioch) and no valid driver's license. A 30-year-old Oakland man found this out at Prince and California streets about 8:15 p.m.

Somebody didn’t lock the Pelican Building, where police, though evidently not the Graduate Assembly, have been extra careful ever since  over Thanksgiving weekend.

The foot of the Campanile at 10:30 p.m. only seems like a secluded place to eat ‘shrooms.

Monday, Dec. 26

A man and woman allegedly selling weed about 3 p.m. at Blake and California streets were arrested.

A woman was walking on Claremont Boulevard at Prince Street about 4:50 p.m. when a scruffy man tore the purse from her shoulder, got into a waiting silver Buick or Chevy and sped west on Prince. A witness followed the thief up College Avenue in his own car, but lost him. The purse, minus all its contents, was recovered.

A scruffy middle-aged man stole electrical wire from the Anna Head construction site about 9:30 p.m. and threatened the employee who saw him doing it.

Sunday, Dec. 25

A man later said to have a blood alcohol level of .185 rear-ended a bus at 2:30 a.m. at San Pablo Avenue and Cedar Street. Neither driver was injured.

Someone was attacked with boiling tea in the 1800 block of Alcatraz Avenue about 4:20 p.m.

A 51-year-old man found at the Unit 2 dorms with a $10,000 misdemeanor warrant out of Oakland was arrested. 

A thief or thieves perhaps planning to re-enact the pilgrimage of the Three Wise Men stole a tent cover and mats from a vehicle in the 3000 block of Adeline Street.

An iPod and golf shoes were stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 600 block of Vistamont Avenue.

The back tire was stripped from a bike at Center Street and Shattuck Avenue about 8:45 p.m.

A 1987 white Toyota pickup was stolen from the 2600 block of Hillegass Avenue.

A chemical fire broke the holiday silence at Latimer Hall.

Saturday, Dec. 24

Those coveted Clinton-era sedans keep vanishing from the 1900 block of Vine Street. A gold 1995 Accord is now missing in action, joining the white 1996 Integra stolen Dec. 20.

Also MIA this this morning is a red Integra from the 2100 block of McKinley Avenue.

And a 1987 white Toyota pickup from the 2800 block of Garber Street.

Somebody kicked open a door in the 2500 block of Ridge Road and stole computer monitors, a bicycle and a green card.

A bag and wallet disappeared about 7 p.m. from an unlocked vehicle in the 1700 block of Stuart Street.

Bikes were stolen from a converted garage in the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue.

Stuff was stolen from the porch of a home in the 2300 block of Cedar Street.

A vehicle owner in the 2100 block of Roosevelt Avenue found the vehicle's window smashed and the glove box rummaged through.

Somebody kicked open the door to a home in the 1500 block of Ward Street.

A harried last-minute gift thief shoplifted a TV from the 2300 block of Shattuck just after 8 p.m.

Friday, Dec. 23

A vehicle in the 400 block of Boynton Avenue found its window smashed this morning and the glove box rummaged through.

Same thing happened on Plaza Drive, except that cash was found and stolen.

Someone strongarmed someone else out of a cell phone about 11:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Prince Street.

Two pedestrians -- Oakland men, 17 and 18 -- were shot during the noon hour on Sacramento near Woolsey streets. They were driven to a hospital by a private citizen; police said one was released soon after and the other is expected to recover. Police have released few details of the 12:41 p.m. incident but say the victims and assailants knew each other.

An $800 black Specialized Allez road bike was stolen this afternoon from Parking Structure C, at Channing Way and Ellsworth Street.

But a blue 1998 Toyota Camry, license plate 5ZQG457, was found at Ellsworth and Durant. UCPD has it if you can prove it’s yours.

A gunman divested someone of his or her cash about 7:40 p.m. in the 2600 block of Telegraph Avenue.

A fender-bender at 2119 Kittredge St. pitted a GMC Heil garbage truck against a white 2006 Ford pickup. 

In the 2000 block of Kittredge, a lock was cut and a bike stolen shortly after 5 p.m.

Backpacks left in an unlocked vehicle in the 1300 block of Sixth Street tempted someone to smash the window about 1:30 p.m.

A cell phone and a bag left unattended in the 2200 and 2100 blocks of Shattuck unsurprisingly disappeared.

There was a flood at the journalism school.

Thursday, Dec. 22

Somebody locked his or her bike to a railing in the 2800 block of College Avenue, only to find the railing broken and the lock gone. 

An unattended laptop in the 2000 block of Hearst Avenue was stolen about 8:30 a.m.

So was an unattended backpack in the 1400 block of University.

Times are tough: Someone stole a health-insurance ID from an unlocked vehicle in the 2600 block of Shasta Road. Also a laptop, sunglasses and bag.

A thief who hates waiting in toll lines pried the lock to a vehicle in the 2000 block of Forest Avenue and stole the FasTrak inside.

Someone with cable cutters spent the lunch hour stealing a bike from the 1700 block of Shattuck Avenue.

A blue 1996 Honda Accord was stolen from Cornell Avenue and Virginia Street.

The rear plate was stripped from a vehicle in the 3000 block of Shattuck.

Somebody stole stuff, including golf shoes and an iPad, from an unlocked vehicle in the 1500 block of Portland Avenue.

Thieves who hate to do their own shopping reached into an unlocked window and stole an iPad and gift cards about 6:45 p.m. from a home in the 1300 block of Cornell Avenue.

A purse, e-reader and wallet were stolen from an unlocked car about 7:40 a.m. in the 1800 block of Seventh Street.

Retro thieves wanted a CD player badly enough to cheat a car lock in the 1600 block of Grant Street.

A bronze statue was looted from a business in the 2900 block of Claremont Avenue.

Bad Santa! Or whoever broke into a garage in the 700 block of Cragmont Avenue and stole computers, jewelry and booze.

Somebody who probably shouldn't had the keys to the silver 2000 Jaguar at Derby and Sacramento streets.

An Occupy couple in the Grove around 11 p.m. with camping gear were spoken to.
