Berkeley Police Log for Dec. 15-21, 2011

Incidents are compiled from reports referenced in the Berkeley Police Department weekly log, the UC Police Daily Activity Bulletin and other reports. The BPD items are derived from a police-provided sampling of the 375 calls the force receives each week.

Wednesday, Dec. 21

Police near the city's so-called "eviction" of Occupy participants, but neither was arrested in Civic Center Park, where the encampment took place, and it's not clear how or if both men were connected with the movement. One was arrested on suspicion of public drunkenness and methamphetamine possession; police say the other had obstructed officers.

Vehicle burglaries at the Lawrence Hall of Science lot are getting worse: this time, the thieves took the whole truck. Montana license plate 404972A, a light-blue Toyota pickup, stolen some time between 10 and 11:30 a.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 20

Crews put out a small brush fire near Grizzly Peak Boulevard about 1 a.m.

A woman who parked her brand-new 2012 Acura Integra overnight in the garage of her home in the 1900 block of Vine Street woke in the morning to find it gone, along with the Coach bag she had left inside. 

A man with a hoard of paraphernalia including a display case of Zippo lighters was found outside a smoke shop in the 2000 block of University Avenue whose door had just been kicked in.

Someone stole a 64-year-old lady's hearing aids from 212 Doe Library. Also her wallet.

A mountain lion was seen near the Lawrence Berkeley Lab at Lawrence and Glasser roads at 8:22 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 19

A 17-year-old girl who insisted on wandering around Grinnell Path (between Oxford Street and the campus) was detained until a parent could come get her.  

A woman in the 1400 block of Carleton Street was unpleasantly surprised during the noon hour by the arm of a teenaged boy reaching through her doggie door, trying to unlock the main door from the inside. Police found a youth matching her description (the arm was inside a pea coat) and arrested him on suspicion of attempted burglary and a probation violation.

A woman learned that someone had opened an account in her name at a Delaware bank and tried to buy Apple computers with it.

Four fans throwing food at Haas Pavilion at 8:30 p.m. were spoken to about it.

A man was cited at 10:30 p.m. for smoking weed in the Underhill Lot.

Sunday, Dec. 18

Three young women were in the 2100 block of Shattuck Avenue about 3 a.m., waiting for a ride home, when they were approached by a 56-year-old man with pants down, masturbating at them. Doubtless his pants-compromised state contributed to his subsequent inability to escape police.

A 17-year-old and 18-year-old seen tampering with bicycles in the North Sproul racks were told to cut it out. The older youth was cited for suspected marijuana possession.

A gentleman under the I-80 overpass at Gilman Street about 2:09 p.m. had a "Stay Away Order" from the area as a condition of his probation, and furthermore seemed drunk. He became violent when an officer tried to find out his condition, so she called paramedics to come take him away.

A woman left her home in the 1700 block of Vine Street about 4:30 p.m. and returned an hour later to find her front-door glass smashed open and the house burglarized and a mess. Among other things, the thief or thieves stole  a white MacBook Pro and computer bag, jewelry and an expensive camera.

A 30-year-old man with no legitimate reason to be at 277 Cory Hall at 6 p.m. on a weekend was thrown off campus for seven days.

Saturday, Dec. 17

A fiftyish gentleman who might have been casing the area around University Avenue and Center Street for future misdeeds was spoken to about it. 

Sometime between 4 and 5 p.m., a woman's wallet was stolen from 315 Wurster Hall.

Friday, Dec. 16

Folks at 2431 Ellsworth were told once again to please be quiet.

A 20-year-old skateboarding at 2332 Channing at 3:14 a.m. was cited for it and for getting lippy to the officer who did the citing.

A 19-year-old Cal student found in Moffitt Library with other people's stolen stuff was arrested and taken to the Berkeley City Jail.

Times are tough: Someone stole a People's Park woman's shopping cart and everything in it; total value $580.

A Cal employee returned after work to her car parked in Underhill Lot to find the door pried open and $1,200 worth of stuff gone.

Sometime between 4:43 and 4:51 p.m., two laptops and $45 were stolen from the Foothill Housing Complex. 

Four teenagers wandering around Koshland Hall at 5:47 p.m. stole a Cal employee's wallet and $270 worth of her stuff.

A man driving at Walnut Street and Berkeley Way with a suspended license was cited.

A student whose wallet was stolen in the East Asian Library on Dec. 12 got around to reporting it. 

Thursday, Dec. 15

Two men with outstanding warrants were found at the Anna Head School between 2 and 3 a.m.; one man, whose warrant was issued by the Nevada County sheriff's office, was taken to jail.

Two lunchtime drinkers at 2427 Dwight Way were briefed on California's open-container laws.

So was an early-afternoon drinker at Ellsworth and Haste.

A UC forklift hit an Acura in the Lawrence Berkeley Lab parking lot.

An 18-year-old found at Center and Oxford streets with stolen property about 7:40 p.m. was arrested.
