Berkeley Police Blotter: Homeowners Fight Burglars and Win

Selected items from the Berkeley crime log for March 3—9 also include vandalism, robbery, auto theft.

The following narratives were selected and written by the Berkeley Police Department. 

March 3

Robbery, Ashby Avenue/Telegraph Avenue: On Sunday, March 3 at approximately 10:30 p.m. a robbery occurred near the intersection of Ashby Avenue and Telegraph Avenue. The male victim was in the area when he stopped to make a phone call. The unknown suspect approached and grabbed the victim’s cell phone and shoved him to the side. The victim was not physically injured and the suspect fled the area on a bicycle.

The suspect is described as:

Suspect – Black Male Adult, average build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants riding a black bicycle.”

March 4

Auto Burglary, 1100 Block of San Pablo Avenue: On Monday, March 4 between 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. an auto burglary occurred in the 1100 block of San Pablo Avenue. The victim parked and locked her vehicle. The unknown suspect broke a window to the vehicle and rummaged through the interior.  Per the victim nothing appears to have been taken. 

March 5

Stolen Auto, 1500 Block of Harmon Street: On Tuesday, March 5 between 9:30 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. an unknown suspect stole the victim’s vehicle from the 1500 block of Harmon Street. The victim parked and locked his vehicle on the street. When he returned he discovered the vehicle missing. The vehicle is a gold, 2002 Chevy Camaro.

March 6

Residential Burglary, 1500 Block of Channing Way: On Wednesday, March 6 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. a home was burglarized in the 1500 block of Channing Way. It appeared that the unknown suspect kicked in a door at the home. The suspect stole several items including jewelry and a computer.

March 7

Vandalism, 3200 Block of Adeline Street: On Thursday, March 7 at approximately 5:30 a.m. the alarm sounded at a business in the 3200 block of Adeline Street. The store owner heard the alarm and checked the business. He discovered an unknown suspect damaged one of the store front windows, cracking it with an unknown object. 

March 8

Residential Robbery, 600 Block of The Arlington: On Friday, March 8,  at approximately 7:15 p.m. BPD responded to a residence in the 600 block of Arlington Avenue.  BPD responded to a report of a burglary in progress. The homeowners came home and found the suspect inside their home. One of the homeowners attempted to detain the suspect and a struggle ensued. BPD officers quickly arrived on scene and were able to detain the suspect. The homeowners were not injured during the incident. Taken and recovered during the incident was jewelry, currency and other miscellaneous items.  The suspect was arrested for residential robbery. 

March 9

Loud Reports, 2300 Block of Derby Street: On Saturday, March 9 at approximately 11:34 p.m. BPD responded to a report of a loud report in the area of the 2300 block of Derby Street. The caller reported hearing one loud report in the area; nothing else was heard or seen. Officers conducted an area check with negative results.
