Berkeley High School Safety Officer Arrested for Identity Theft

High school official arrested for identify theft.

A Berkeley High School security officer was arrested for identity theft last week, said the Berkeley Police Department. William Arthur Keys Jr. of Oakland was arrested at the high school on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The arrest was the culmination of a two-month investigation. Police say they secured warrants and that probable cause existed to arrest Keys.

Identity theft is a felony, with a bail of $10,000. There is a possibility that the investigation may be ongoing, thus this is all the information City of Berkeley Police Department is sharing currently.”

Let’s us not forget the historically low wages paid to public school district, “classified” employees, i.e. office workers, bus drivers, teacher aides, custodians, et (versus certificated and administrative). While all receive generous paid holidays, sick, vacation pay (medical, dental), etc (if a regular employee; not a “sub” or hourly paid)…given today’s high payroll taxes…the actual ‘net income (paid only monthly)…makes living and working very, very difficult. This alleged theft might actually be indicative of an employee having to go to extremes to survive and keep working while so many others working around him get three to five times more pay simply by title.

Yes, I found it a very interesting detail that it was something so utilitarian as utility bills! Rather than something flashy...

Some other reports have said that pot plants were found growing in his home. The demands of that side project could have resulted in unusually high utility bills.

That's interesting...I quickly googled but didn't find any links...do you happen to have a link to where that's being reported?

Mr. Keys is a union employee and has been employed at BUSD for over a decade. What he is making is probably fairly decent. Let's just say that there's no excuse for stealing a coworkers checking account info.
