Arrest in Alleged Assault with Deadly Weapon at People's Park

A fast-acting UC Berkeley Police officer spotted a fleeing, injured 55-year-old suspect from an alleged assault with a pole at People's Park and took him into custody in front of Peet's on Telegraph Avenue Thursday, UC said.

An injured 55-year-old man was arrested by UC Berkeley police in front of Peet's Coffee on Telegraph Thursday in connection with an alleged assault with a pole that had just occurred at People's Park, UC police said Friday.

A UC Berkeley officer on patrol in the park reported at 10:17 a.m. that an altercation had just occurred and that the suspect had fled, police said. Another campus officer heard the description broadcast by police dispatch, spotted the suspect and stopped him in front of Peet's, half a block from the park.

The man had injuries to his head and arm from the altercation in the park and was taken to Alta Bates hospital for treatment before being taken into custody. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
