Suspect Nabbed after Armed Street Robbery

A 21-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint of her cellphone and purse in a street robbery in Berkeley Friday night. It was the third night in a row that a street robbery occurred in the general vicinity of the UC Berkeley campus.

An 18-year-old male suspected of having robbed a woman at gunpoint on Derby Street Friday night was arrested by police a short time later, UC police said today, Thursday.

It was the third night in a row that a nighttime street robbery or robbery attempt occurred in the general area of the UC Berkeley campus.

A 21-year-old woman was walking in the 2600 block of Derby about 8:30 p.m. Friday when she was confronted by a male who pointed a gun at her and grabbed her cell phone, campus police said in a "crime alert." 

The robber also took her purse and fled the area on foot, police said.

A short time later, he was detained by Berkeley police officers near the intersection of Regent Street and Dwight Way and arrested on suspicion of robbery, UC police said.

On the night before, Oct. 31, a 20-year-old male student at UC Berkeley was attacked by four males in an attempted robbery next to the main library on campus.

On the previous night, Oct. 30, a woman was robbed of her cell phone by two males a block north of the campus at Scenic Avenue and Ridge Road.
