300 South Side Drunks host Cops

EMBEDDED SOUTH SIDE
By Ted Friedman/Berkeley ReporterOct. 6, 20-13

As many as five-hundred young drunks, many of whom gathered outside 2537 Haste St. at Bowditch, Saturday at 11:30 p.m.,across from People's Park, got a visit from ten cop cars Saturday night, according to an eyewitness.

According to the witness the drunks were telling cops, "we're not like this."

The Haste street building, where the incident occurred, is the former site of the Anna Head School, but is presently  un-named.
Neighborhood street-talk speculates that the unmarked building is substituting for the student union, which is closed for a remodel in connection with the on-going re-construction of the lower Sproul Plaza.

At press-time, university spokesmen were closed for the weekend.

SUNDAY NIGHT, COPS returned to Dwight/Hillegass, a block from the drunken event, rumored to have been a student function.
This time cops assisted one man with a history of mental illness.

I heard, "get down on the walk now" from a squad car,  The suspect, alleged by a knowledgeable neighborhood source, to have a history of mental illness, has been observed pulling up cement from a Bowditch sidewalk.

Once the suspect was cuffed, two other squad cars arrived, followed by civilians with clipboards, who arrived in a white unmarked passenger vehicle. An hour later, the man was transported by an Alameda County paramedic van to a local mental health facility.

"Fifty-one fifties," or threat to self or others are a common sight South Side. U.C. students skirt such events on the way to their rooms, seemingly regarding them as part of the South Side scene.
