Memorial Service for USF Professor Who Died in Berkeley Fire

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, for University of San Francisco Professor Andrew Goodwin, who died from injuries suffered in a Sept. 10 fire at his Berkeley apartment on Oregon Street.

A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon, Sept. 26, for University of San Francisco Professor Andrew Goodwin, who died in a fire in his apartment on Oregon Street in Berkeley on Sept. 10.

The service for Goodwin, 54, is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the campus, in Xavier Hall inside the Fromm Institute located behind St. Ignatius Church along Parker Avenue (Parker at McAllister). A reception will follow.

Goodwin was a professor of media studies known for his work on popular music, media and cultural theory, and special classes, including one of Led Zepplin.

A notice from the university said:

The memorial service for USF Professor Andrew Goodwin will take place TOMORROW, Thursday, Sept 26 at 4:30 p.m.

Dr. Goodwin was a respected scholar, esteemed colleague, and dynamic teacher. He was the author of a well-known book on Music Television and cultural theory (Dancing in the Distraction Factory: Music Television and Popular Culture, University of Minnesota Press) and published numerous articles on media and cultural theory. His areas of interest included media aesthetics, critical theory, and popular music. He was known for his unique class offerings such as “Special Topics: Led Zeppelin,” a semester-long course using the band to examine cultural trends beyond the music.

Professor Goodwin received his Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from the University of Birmingham, England. He served on the Editorial Board of Popular Music and Society, was a Corresponding Editor for Media, Culture & Society and wrote for Tricycle, Inquiring Mind, and theworsthorse.net.

Andrew is greatly missed by his colleagues and friends.
