Berkeley Death Notices – Paul and Gunnell

Two people with connections to Berkeley recently passed away: Phyllis Hammond Paul, 91, who was born in Berkeley and wrote for newspapers in Orange County, and Chris Gunnell, 66, who was raised in Berkeley and worked as railroad switchman operator.

Phyllis Hammond Paul was born in Berkeley and graduated from University High School. In 1931, she was one of 250 children selected by U.C. Berkeley's Institute for Human Development for a life-long study on human development and longevity. She raised her family in Southern California and wrote for two newspapers in Orange County. Paul passed away on June 22 at the age of 91.

Chris Gunnell, a resident of Pinole, was raised in Berkeley, graduating from Berkeley High School in 1964. He was in the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. He worked for 37 years as a switchman operator for Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads. Gunnell passed away on July 18 at the age of 66.
