American Liver Foundation to Honor Berkeley Woman

Dr. Carol L. Brosgart will be honored at the Salute to Excellence Awards Gala for her impact in advancing the foundation's knowledge and improving quality of life in the battle against liver disease.

A Berkeley woman will be one of 400 leaders in the biotechnology, health care and policy arenas the American Liver Foundation will honor at its Salute to Excellence Awards Gala this Saturday, April 13.

Carol L. Brosgart, MD, Senior Advisor on Science and Policy, VHAC at the CDC Foundation and the Division of Viral Hepatitis at the CDC and Clinical Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Division of Global Health, UCSF, is actively engaged in medical care, public health and policy, biotechnology, clinical research and drug development and medical education.

She will be recognized by three industry leaders for her impact in advancing the foundation's knowledge and improving quality of life in the battle against liver disease at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

Liver disease affects more 600,000 Bay Area residents and is a leading cause of death among adults between the ages of 25 and 64. The 2013 honorees are crucial in the quest to save and improve the lives of those affected by disease, and in particular, liver disease.

Other recipients of the awards also include:

A. Grant Heidrich, Partner Emeritus, Mayfield Fund, Strategic Advisor to The Column Group and angel investor has worked in venture capital for 30 years, principally at the Mayfield Fund where he launched and co-managed their dedicated health care practice and helped establish the firm’s renowned franchise in life sciences. 

Martha Saly, Executive Director of the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable, a coalition of more than 200 public, private and voluntary organizations is dedicated to reducing the incidence of infection, morbidity and mortality from viral hepatitis in the United States.

Proceeds from the Salute to Excellence benefit the American Liver Foundation, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for liver health promotion and disease prevention. This is the 14th annual dinner and reception by the Foundation in San Francisco.

As the largest non-governmental resource of liver research funding, the Foundation supports scientific research through early career grants to promising scientists. Since 1979, the American Liver Foundation has awarded over 800 grants to physicians and research scientists studying new preventions, treatments and cures for liver disease including researchers at UCSF and Stanford.
