What's Open, Closed for Indigenous People's Day (Columbus Day) in Berkeley

Monday, Oct. 14, is Berkeley's Indigenous People's Day holiday (instead of Columbus Day). Public schools, city offices and public library branches are closed. UC Berkeley is open. BART will operate a normal schedule if there's no strike.

In lieu of the Columbus Day holiday, the City Berkeley observes Indigenous People's Day, which this year falls on Monday, Oct. 14.

Here's what's open and closed in Berkeley and on Monday:

Open: 

  • UC Berkeley
  • Most businesses
Closed: 
  • Berkeley public schools (it's a staff development day, with no school for students)
  • City of Berkeley offices
  • Berkeley Public Library
  • Saint Mary's College High School
  • U.S. Post Office
Other:
  • BART – regular Monday schedule if there's no strike
  • County of Alameda offices – open
  • Alameda County Superior Court – closed
  • State offices – open
  • Federal offices not already closed by government partial shutdown – closed
