'Standing Together' Theme for Berkeley Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast

The Berkeley Martin Luther King, Jr. community breakfast, now in its third year, pays tribute to the life and work of the renowned civil rights leader. It's being held this year on Monday, Jan. 20, at HS Lordships.

It's no accident that the theme for the third annual Berkeley Martin Luther King, Jr. community breakfast is "Standing Together," says Bryon Williams, columnist and pastor of the Resurrection Community Church.

It's a "community wide event based on touching all parts of the community" and "supported by the mayor's office, City Council members, police and fire departments, Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, the University of California, local churches and other community groups," Williams says in a column on the Huffington Post.

The breakfast takes place this year on Monday, the federal holiday honoring King, from 8-10 a.m. at HS Lordships restaurant in Berkeley.

According to Williams, "The committee's theme of 'Standing Together' is beautifully articulated by the following:

"'Standing together is the prerequisite in pursuit of King's Beloved Community. Just as those who valiantly came before stood in places such as Montgomery, Birmingham, Selma, and Memphis, we too stand in an effort to achieve a reconciled world, creating an environment where justice prevails and individuals attain their full human potential.'"

The event, which also includes awards, drew more than 400 people last year.
