Reception with Local Artist in Residence, Renee Powell

Arlington Community Church (ACC) in Kensington announces local artist, Renee Powell, as our Artist/Theologian in Residence in 2014. Please join us for a reception during which she will present pieces from her exhibition, "Echoes and Fragments" part of which will be installed in our cozy Fireside Room.

"Echoes and Fragments" is a powerful collection which reflects on Krystal Nacht, the night on which Nazis brutally attacked Jewish communities in Germany and Austria in November, 1938. Powell, whose father was able to escape Nazi Germany as a child, describes her collection as "a deeply personal statement about sifting through the shards and treasures of my personal family history in order to continue my search for personal truth and the affirmation of divine presence despite the horrors of Jewish genocide. Many of the ceramic forms have been broken and pieced back together in mosaic forms in order to express the literal brokenness that has resulted from the Shoah."

Renee Powell comes to ACC as an accomplished artist who studied and now teaches at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in the Center for Art and Religion. Her website can be viewed here.
