Project YouthView 2014: The Power of Youth in Film
Project YouthView 2014: The Power
of Youth in Film
An Evening Showcase of winning local Youth Films, a Chance to Vote for Your
Favorite Film, plus screening of award-winning short feature and audience discussion.
WHAT:
Alternatives in Action’s 10th annual, one-of-a-kind youth film festival to be
held Friday, May 2, 2014 at the historic and grand Paramount Theatre in Oakland.
Project YouthView showcases select youth-created film shorts from across the
Bay Area and a featured Sundance-winning documentary, Rich Hill. The event
opens up important dialogue between youth and adults about the issues young
people face and inspires youth to tell their stories and pursue a career in
arts and media. Proceeds from Project YouthView benefit the multi-media
programs of Alternatives in Action and enable us to continue Project YouthView
as a powerful venue for youth expression.
This years’ 12 selected youth-created films were selected through a competitive
process by industry and community judges from over 40 pieces submitted by youth
throughout the Bay Area. The shorts use powerful images, animation, music video
and narrative storytelling to shed light on issues of importance to young
people, with topics as diverse as coping with school pressures, growing up in
foster care, the impact of violence on urban youth, technology addiction, and
grappling with conflicting cultural identities. In each film, the voice and
style of the filmmakers shines uniquely through, sometimes jolting us awake, or
delighting us with their humor and whimsy.
All selected filmmakers will receive a prize package. In addition, an Audience
Choice Award and Judges Choice Award - selected by industry notables and
experts, including Russell Simmons, Terence Winter of award-winning Boardwalk
Empire and Rachel Winter of Oscar nominated Dallas Buyer’s Club - of $500 each
will be presented to the winning youth filmmakers. The Judges Choice Awardee
will also enjoy a private tour of Lucas Films.
