Kevin Lacanlale, 19, died early yesterday morning. A little after 4 a.m, a 40-foot tree fell across Highway 13 and Lacanlale and three other passengers hit the tree and “rolled to a stop in the center median” according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The passengers then walked to the shoulder when a Ford pickup hit the tree and “went airborne, hitting and killing Lacanlale,” according to the paper.
Lacanlale was pronounced dead at the scene, Officer Sam Morgan said.
The wet roads and bad visibility didn’t help, according KGO and the San Francisco Chronicle. The tree was "weakened by this week's rain." The Chronicle reports that the UC Berkeley freshman, was studying medicine and was one of 1000 students nationwide to receive a Bill Gates Academic Scholarship.
