A confluence of factors is ending the weekly presence of the Off the Grid food trucks in North Berkeley and has the organizers talking about a new location.
Plans for construction at Rose Street and Shattuck Avenue was one of the reasons for the departure. And concerns about competition from brick-and-mortar businesses nearby also factored in.
Off the Grid is continuing its Thursday evening event at Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street.
In the Gourmet Ghetto, some restaurant owners told Michael Kaplan, Berkeley's economic development manager, that they lost $1,000 every Wednesday night after Off the Grid started its weekly North Berkeley event in June 2011, according to a story on Berkeleyside.
Matt Coen of Off the Grid told the East Bay Express that he hopes to find a North Berkeley location where the food trucks "can be comfortable for awhile."
Because the North Shattuck Association wants to reconfigure parking in the North Berkeley location, the city decided not to renew Off the Grid's permit.
