Berkeley Police Advice On Cell Phone Robberies

The Berkeley Police Department issued the safety tips below on preventing cell phone robberies, which have increased sharply in recent months.

The advisory accompanied the latest police crime blotter, which included a would-be robber trying steal a cell phone from a woman at 11:55 a.m. near University Avenue and Grant Street. The woman was able to fight him off. The blotter also included the completed robbery of an iPod from a woman who was grabbed by one of two assailants at 8 p.m. near Derby and Etna streets.

The Berkeley Police Department on Monday issued the follow advisory on preventing cell phone robberies.

COMMUNITY SAFETY TIP:

Cell Phone Robbery Prevention:

· Be alert to your surroundings and people around you.

· Do not lend your phone to anyone you do not know or take it out of your purse, pocket or bag to give someone the time, if asked.

· Whenever feasible, walk, jog or travel with a friend or friends.

· Don’t talk on cell phones or listen to IPods when alone, as they significantly limit awareness.

· Be aware of locations and situations, which make you more vulnerable to crime such as alleys, doorways, parking lots and stairwells.
