Oaks Theatre on Solano closed right before Christmas 2010 and has been sitting vacant since. We would like to get your ideas on what to do with this theater.
Merriment Media took over the theatre in 2010 with the intention of showing foreign/Bollywood films on one screen, first-run films on another, and also acquire a beer and wine license.
They failed to show first-run films most likely because it's difficult to compete with the large chains like United Artists and AMC for them and they also failed to acquire the beer and wine license. In less than a year they ran out of money and were forced to close.
The theater is fully equipped: projectors, theater seating, concessions stands, paper towel dispensers, etc. All it needs is an operator with a good concept and the ability to execute it. Also, the building owner acquired a beer and wine license for the property so that part is now taken care of.
What do you think should go here? A different type of movie theater, a dine-in theater, live performances, or something completely different?
