Purple Kow – Instant Hit in Berkeley

There may be nearly a dozen tapioca tea places in a one-mile radius of downtown Berkeley, but the latest arrival, Purple Kow, began drawing long lines the day it opened this week.

Purple Kow, a popular tapioca and dessert stop in San Francisco, finally opened in Berkeley this week.

Originally scheduled to start business in April, many fans were growing impatient with the delay.

"When exactly are you guys going to open the Berkeley branch? You guys said April but it is now May," said Lac Le on Purple Kow's Facebook page.

As Purple Kow opened its doors on Monday, the wait seemed to be over – or so we thought.

Since opening day, the lines at Purple Kow have been spilling out of the entrance all day. Customers had to wait 20-30 minutes in line just to order their drinks.

"We've been waiting for about 15-20 minutes," said Catharine Chiu, as she waited in line for her drinks.

Purple Kow is well-known for its signature "chubby cups" and serves a variety of teas, slushies and coffees as well as snacks and desserts. According to their website, they serve 10 different toppings to accompany the drink of your choice, including traditional ones like boba and lychee and some unique ones like boba noodle and tea jelly.

Purple Kow is located at 2164 Center Street and is only open for six hours between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. for the time being.
