Chez Panisse to Reopen June 21 – Summer Solstice

Chez Panisse, the acclaimed Berkeley restaurant started by Alice Waters in 1971, will reopen June 21 with a fundraiser for the Edible Schoolyard. It has been closed since March 8 because of a fire.

Alice Water's Chez Panisse restaurant on Shattuck Avenue plans to reopen June 21, following the March 8 fire that damaged the building.

The reopening on the summer solstice will be a evening fundraiser in the restaurant and cafe with special menus, music, dancing and wine to celebrate the restaurant's comeback and the solstice, according to the Chez Panisse website.

The cost is $1,000 a person in the cafe and $2,500 a person in the restaurant. All proceeds will support the Edible Education programs at the Edible Schoolyard Project, which teaches youngsters organic gardening and kitchen skills. Those wishing to make reservations or get more information may call 510-843-3811.

The famed Berkeley restaurant also said on its website that it will resume taking reservations by phone beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, with reservations accepted online beginning the following day.

Kip Mesirow, the original builder, is leading the design and reconstruction efforts.
