Atypical House in Berkeley

The landmarked Charles W. Woodworth house is for sale.

Is the title a typo? Did I mean to say “A Typical House?” I thought it looked funny too, but it comes from the listing flyer for a new house on the market at 2237 Carleton St., on the southside of town.

This house is anything but typical. Built in 1903 and historically landmarked as the Charles W. Woodworth House, it has six++ bedrooms (rooms that for some reason, like not having built-in closets, can't be called an official "bedroom") and three baths, with just under 4,000 sq ft of living space spread out on multiple levels, all on a 6,750 sq ft lot.

The house is on the market for $975,000 and will be open Sun Oct 2 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The listing flyer can be found at www.2237carleton.com.

What I love about this house is the abundance of fine grain redwood wall panels and built-ins, leaded glass windows everywhere, an unusual corner awning window arrangement, cozy window seats, a unique custom cabinet built around a chimney, the very un-shy tile schemes in two of the bathrooms, a never-before seen peep-hole that looks down on the entry porch, and last but not least, the upper level 45’ long “Big Room with Red Stove.” The backyard  comes equipped with a hot tub with view of the chicken coop.

My pictures cover the highlights, but definitely check out the flyer and the house itself.
