Swapfest: 3 Performance Venues Mix It Up for Weekend Shows

Go beyond the familiar: venues in Temescal, East Oakland and Berkeley join forces for a weekend of performances.

Three East Bay performances venues — including Berkeley's Subterranean Arthouse — are "mixing it up" this weekend by curating shows at each other's venues, a venture they are calling Swapfest.

The shows will take place Thursday, April 11, through Saturday, April 13, in Temecal, East Oakland and Berkeley.

They say they are "creating a whole weekend of live performance for you, cross-pollinating locales and audiences and artists."

—April 11, the Subterranean Arthouse curates a show at TAC: Temescal Art Center, 511 - 48th St., Oakland. Hiroko Tamano & Earth Maiden Butoh ensemble, 8:30 p.m., $10 per person.

—April 12, Temescal Art Center presents its firt artists-in-residence, Karla Quintero and Deborah Karp, at The MilkBar, in the Sunshine Biscuit Factory complex on 81st Avenue in Oakland (see website for directions). 8:30 p.m., $10 per person. Karla Johanna Quintero will present two duets in progress, inspired by human-like objects. Performers include Emily Baumann, Carly Johnson and Karla Johanna Quintero, accompanied by live music from electronic artist, Donald Hanson. Deborah Karp is working on a new dance with performers Janet Das, Brittney Delaney, Hallie Dalsimer and Romina Rodriguez-Crosta. Music & audiovisual set by The Spectrum Electric.

—April 13, The MilkBar presents performances by performances by  paige starling sorvillo / blindsight  and Erin Malley at the Subterranean Arthouse, 2179 Bancroft Way, Berkeley. 8:30 p.m., $10 per person. New music by Raphi Gottesman with video by Vera Kachouh and videos by Dominique Zeltzman, Jen Gwirtz, Michael O'Connell.
