Second Friday Concert Series

Arlington Community Church has teamed up with Bay Area Classical Harmonies (BACH) to produce a brand-new musical experience for Kensington: the Second Friday Concert Series. The inaugural Second Friday concert will take place on the evening of October 12 in the church’s serene sanctuary.

The ambitious program for the evening begins with Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, one of the premier Baroque works and one of Bach’s most impressive. Known as the “Bach Double,” nowhere in the repertoire of Western string music are the intricacies of counterpoint and musical wordplay on more skillful display.

The evening continues with Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a work that nearly epitomizes the composer’s unique Romantic style, and the composer’s tumultuous mind. An inspiration for the ubiquitous piano concerto of Edvard Grieg, this Schumann masterpiece is a Romantic grandfather, an artistic force that must be acknowledged in any piano concerto that followed

The evening concludes with Brahms’ Song of Destiny (Schicksalslied), a short, haunting piece for chorus and orchestra. With text borrowed from Friedrich Hölderlin’s poem “Hyperions Schicksalslied,” the piece is both tragic and awesome.
