Jessica Jones and Mark Taylor at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse

Composer/Instrumentalists Jessica Jones and Mark Taylor have joined forces to present an open-minded, open-ended project of original music that thoroughly explores and exploits the tension between freedom and structure always present in jazz and improvised music.

Jessica Jones (composer/tenor sax) has worked with Joseph Jarman, Cecil Taylor, Steve Coleman, Don Cherry, and Peter Apfelbaum; as well as a variety of Haitian, Caribbean and African bands. These influences helped form her compositional direction which is grounded in the jazz tradition and, as is truly traditional in jazz, reaches for new directions and a unique sound.

Mark Taylor (composer/french horn/mellophone) is one of only a handful of performers to successfully integrate the notoriously difficult French Horn in jazz and improvised music. Coda Magazine described Taylor’s sound as "rapturous" and "golden" and JazzTimes said his playing is "as fluid and limpid as (the) flute, and as gnarly as (the) alto." His innovative style has won him recognition by such legendary artists as Max Roach, who said, "Mark Taylor is a virtuoso instrumentalist...there is no one dealing with the french horn or the music the way he is."

Mark and Jessica have performed as leaders at venues in NYC and around the world at clubs and festivals in Canada, Austria, Finland and Slovenia.

"The French horn is a notoriously finicky beast to master in a fast-paced improv setting which is probably why not many players have made their mark with the instrument. Add Mark Taylor's name to the list of the chosen few."
-- Time Out New York

“Mark Taylor’s quartet certainly is unlike any other performing in today’s jazz scene.”
—Don Williamson, JazzReview.com

"An incisive soloist ..."
—JazzTimes

"Taylor plays French horn boldly and lyrically..."
—Bob Blumenthal, Atlantic Monthly
