History Tour: Early Community Service Centers of West Berkeley

Led by Steve Finacom.

In conjunction with the 's fall exhibit on the centennial of women's right to vote in California, this Walking Tour highlights aspects of early women’s history in Berkeley.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Berkeley women were not only winning votes and building impressive social clubs in the eastern part of town, but also were providing direct social services in West Berkeley. Remarkably, many of the buildings, which were privately built to house programs for the poor, survive today. They include a rare West Coast “settlement house,” an early nursery, a health facility, and an unusual Bernard Maybeck-inspired community center. Wheelchair accessible.
