What Should Live Here?

There's a whole lot of nothing at this corner. Is that bad?

There's a sign on the fence cautioning "Hard Hat Area," but there's neither hat, head nor hammer in sight in this field of brown on Sacramento Street at University Avenue.

What do you see in this plot's future -- and what would you like to see? A community garden? Playground? Housing for the homeless?

This plot is to be a boutique hotel, eventually. I don't know the hold up but it is in progress. I don't understand what is wrong with vacant lots. When I was a child we had vacant lots in our town where children used to play. Now god forbid we have a plot to play on. I suggest that until the hotel is built they plant grass and let people sit or lie on it.

In general I agree with the previous sentiment, except that in this day and age, vacant lots, especially along urban corridors, turn into really undesireable locations for play (trash, needles, dog shit, etc.). What about low-income cohousing units with a community garden and bike path connections? Main entrance access and maybe parking off a neighboring street, Berkeley Way?

I would say a community garden, but that lot was a gas station for so long I'm sure the soil is very toxic. In fact, probably one of the hold ups for any building has to do with this problem.

We need an auto parts store. Kragan used to be nearby that location.
How about a cooperative auto parts store? Maybe with an area to hold car maintenance and basic repair or conversion to biodiesel classes? One that would take in an at risk student every year to train them in business and trade skills (as the Cheese Board Collective does.) There once was both a coop auto shop and hardware store back in the Co-Op Stores days. I don't use my car much, but do need one for work and moving heavy gear sometimes. It's a drag to have to go to Oakland or El Cerrito just to buy an air filter or brake pads, etc.

The name is weirdly spelled, but not this weird. It's Caffe, not Caffee. I've only typed these wordsRead More a thousand times.
