Would you say this is a ladybug or a watermelon? If the latter, maybe it's not an "only in Berkeley" design job after all. We hear tell there is a home in Rhode Island that not only features red exterior walls with black polka dots (seeds, that is), but a roof painted light and dark green, like the stripes on a watermelon rind.
