Is Berkeley Crazy About Bubble Tea?

The word on the street is that Berkeley likes its tea with tapioca starch "pearls" or "boba" at the bottom. So, who does bubble tea best?

Berkeley is dotty about bubble tea, apparently. We're flocking to Sweetheart Cafe, Tapioca Express or Moccacino Cafe for our fix of the gooey, black pearls. Maybe we're even venturing into the faraway land of Piedmont Avenue to Mr Green Bubble or L'Amyx. We don't know what it is about these little balls of starch that make tea a whole different experience, but we're hooked. It's like having a delicious beverage and a tasty snack all at once.

But where-oh-where in Berkeley is the ultimate bubble tea being served? Where are the pearls like ice cold jello and the tea a perfect complement to the bitter bite of the boba?

Daily Californian bloggers did a "tapioca crawl" a few years ago and hailed Sweetheart Cafe as the winner. The foodies on Chowhound agree that Sweetheart has "excellent tapioca pearls," but the folks on Yelp rate Moccacino higher for its "soft and chewy" boba balls.
