'Chihuahua Express' Airlifts Dogs from Berkeley to Idaho

The Berkeley animal shelter sent 20 dogs Monday to Idaho aboard the "Chihuahua Express." Their travel companions included 10 pooches from the Alameda animal shelter.

Thirty small dogs from the Berkeley and Alameda animal shelters headed for new homes in Idaho Monday aboard the "Chihuahua Express," according to Mim Carlson, executive director of the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter.

Carlson said Berkeley Animal Services and the Alameda had more small dogs — mostly Chihuahuas  — than people wanting to adopt them. Twenty Berkeley dogs and 10 pooches from Alameda were sent by air to the Idaho Humane Society in Boise.

"It's really hard to say good-bye to our 10 little dogs but we know they have a much better chance of finding new homes in Boise where there is a big demand for Chihuahuas," Carlson said.

"We wish all of them a joy-filled life in their new homes."

Wings of Rescue provided transportation Monday from the Livermore Airport.

Pet Food Express donated crates for the Berkeley dogs, while volunteers provided transport to the Livermore airport.

Carlson said Providence Veterinary Hospital, Alameda Pet Hospital and Park Centre Animal Hospital, all in Alameda, paid the flight fees for the Alameda shelter dogs.
