Cheap Thrills: Pit Stop at Yogurtland

Create your own frosty concoction at this downtown establishment.

As the golden afternoons of summer dwindle, and the hustle of daytime activity slows, give in to the lazy pull of the day and visit Yogurtland, on Shattuck Avenue, for a refreshing sweet treat. With its stark, modern interior and cool Japanese vibe, Yogurtland is a harbor of calm in the busy sea of Downtown Berkeley.

Following the trendy self-serve, pay-by-the-ounce model, Yogurtland offers 16 flavors daily, ensuring something for everyone's taste. Stand out flavors like Red Velvet Cupcake Batter, Chocolate Coconut Truffle and Key Lime Bar (tart) make choice a challenge, a consequence which often results in a traffic jam at the machines. Still, the shared delight of unbridled excess tends to breed patience and everyone waits their turn.

The impressively laden — and temptingly arrayed — topping bar inspires kooky combinations, and provokes a joyful, gluttonous impulse. Gummy worms, Capt 'n' Crunch cereal, and smashed Reese's peanut butter cups are piled high next to healthier options like pineapple, mango, or raspberries.

So, the next time you find yourself in the neighborhood, make a pit stop — put on the brakes, pull over, and treat yourself to the happy pleasure of frozen yogurt.
