Remember Berkeley Youth Chorus?

Anyone out there a member of the vintage Berkeley Youth Chorus in days of yore (mid-1960's)? Local school kids from all over Berkeley participated in the Winter and Spring events, with singing practice held at different venues around town till the big concert.  The big Christmas pageant held each year at the Berkeley Community Theater at Berkeley High featured the young singers donning bright red and green bow ties and ascending into the theater on the orchestra risers - very cool!  In the spring a less formal concert was held.  Miss Barbara Fritz (a Berkeley High alum) led the chorus and dear Mrs. Neighbor accompanied on the piano!  Great memories... like the pretty windows at Hink's each Christmas, a shopping trip to Kress, and the still-quintessential visit(s) to Berkeley Hardware every season for new Christmas lights.

As I recall, the Christmas "spectaculars" were performed in the Florence Schwimley Little Theater, an adjunct to the Community Theater. The stage did rise from below and we came up singing. Can't recall if we left Youth Chorus before it ended its run or not. But I remember the words to a lot of the hymns and carols I first learned from Ms. Fritz, who made a motley group of kids from all over sound like a choir. I hope her memories of those times as pleasant as those of us she directed. Happy holidays, Ms. Fritz!

The "Berkeley Youth Chorus" is gone, but Berkeley still features a mixed youth choir, which has a concert this weekend (see events). For other nearby choirs see http://obviously.com/56/youth-choirs-san-francsico-bay-area
