On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, 186 volunteers at the Alameda County Community Food Bank’s Community Engagement Center sorted, packaged and labeled 19,500 pounds of pears, 16,500 pounds of apples, 5,000 pounds of mixed fruit, and 9,000 pounds of food-drive donations.
That’s twice the number who participated in last year’s event!
Groups from Food Bank member agencies, local businesses, civic organizations and even a 13th birthday party, lent their hands despite the chill in the warehouse.
The Food Bank has seen demand increase 145% since 2007, and volunteer hands are still needed!
