ABOUT THE SHOW:

Ragtime, a musical drama, written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, noted playwright Terrence McNally, and based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, is set in the volatile melting pot of New York at the dawn of the 20th century.

Ragtime weaves together three distinctly American tales - that of an upper-class wife and mother, stifled and yearning for more, a Jewish immigrant, struggling to protect his young daughter against the ravages of poverty, and a Harlem musician wooing the mother of his child.

As the stories of these three unlikely collaborators weave in and around each other, they become united by their courage, compassion, and belief in the promises of the future.

Stephen Flaherty's score draws upon traditional Jewish folk sounds, Vaudeville's big and brassy melodies, and Scott Joplin's lively Ragtime invoking the very early sounds of the Harlem Renaissance.

Directed by Jennifer Boesing, choreographed by Russell Wright, and accompanied by a live 26- piece orchestra led by Music Director and Conductor Dave Moschler.

The show may be most appropriate for ages 13 and above.

An educational study guide for the show is available on the YMTC website: http://www.ymtcberkeley.org/ragtime/

YTMC brings together the Bay Area's most talented and dedicated young singer/actors with professional directors, designers, and musicians to create theater that takes on challenging and sophisticated musical and dramatic themes.

WOW! I saw YMTC's opening night of Ragtime last night, and it was phenomenal. Incredibly moving (tears, laughter), powerful stories, and tremendous courage to look at the history of racism, in particular, with honesty and compassion. So relevant for our times! The cast members are so talented and effective they "tell the story" remarkably powerfully (and their voices are heavenly), the orchestra/music was wonderful, the choreography and staging a complete treat. The audience erupted into a long, standing ovation - well deserved. It's a "not to be missed" show.

YMTC's "Ragtime" is an incredible musical that touches your eyes, ears and heart! YMTC director, careographer and acters have created a very powerful show. The young acters pour their heart and soul into this timeless story. Even though the play takes place in early 20th century, the subjects it covers: racism, class struggle, immigration issues are still very valid today. If nothing else, it is worth seeing to hear the wonderful music and singing.

We drove all the way from Placerville just to see "Ragtime," and it was well worth it. Listen to me: go see this show. The talent, professionalism, and dedication of these young people completely blew us away. After the show, we were slack-jawed with amazement at the experience we had just been through. This production of "Ragtime" shook us up, made us laugh, thrilled us, and brought tears to our eyes. Congratulations to every member of the cast for your brilliant performance. We will be back to see your next show.

"Ragtime" is community theater at it's absolute best. The production values are so high, you will feel as if you are attending a professional production of the highest quality.
The bar is so high for these young performers and they consistently reach as high or higher. The music is haunting and gets under your skin and you'll find yourself humming these tunes a few days later. The significance of the story and the message, though not heavy handed, is an important historical message as well as surprisingly current as we deal with Occupy movements and ongoing
-isms of all types. This company not only shares this wonderful artistry and important themes with the audience but, in addition, the young people are learning, in vivo, how to handle the experiences of hate as well as redemption and love as they act them out in this beautiful and exciting production.
