Author Reading/Book Signing on International Women’s Day

Two authors' books share themes of managing personal loss, loyalty to family, and joy in life.

Berkeley, CA—On March 8th at 7p.m., local authors Bill Broder and Renée Gibbons will discuss and read from their latest works at Books Inc., 1760 4th St., Berkeley, CA  94710.

In A Prayer for the Departed Bill Broder honors the elders of his family whose 20th century lives were steeped in the rich mix of a secular America and Jewish belief and ritual. The drama of the book follows a voyage of the author from his home as he leaves his widowed mother and all that she demands. As he revisits his family on important occasions, he carries on a life-long dialogue, often an argument, with his mother about the differences in their lives.  The book ends when the author returns as a middle-aged man to express his love and appreciation for his mother and her generation as she declines into dementia and her life’s end. Other books by Broder include: The Sacred Hoop and Taking Care of Cleo.

Renée Gibbons was born in Dublin, Ireland and escaped to Paris when she was seventeen.  She spent years working her way around the world, ending up in San Francisco, which became the base of her life as a writer, actor, singer, and peace activist.  Her memoir, Longing for Elsewhere, also explores the themes entangled in her journey:  identity, adventure, creativity, the burden of history, and the passion for justice.  Gibbons worked as a columnist for the West Coast edition of the Irish Herald for thirteen years. She has lived in San Francisco for three decades.

Books Inc is the oldest independent bookstore on the West Coast with 10 locations in California. Although it technically became Books Inc. in 1946, the company can trace it's roots all the way back to the California Gold Rush. A relatively small bookstore in this age of super sized stores like Barnes & Noble, Books Inc. is only a bit over 3,000 square feet. According to store management, each Books Inc. location has a slightly different focus and they are waiting to see what it is that Berkeley wants to focus on.  In the meantime, the store stocks a nice broad selection of everything from childrens books and a few toys and stuffed animals, to literature, science, art and travel. Book readings, story time for children and book clubs are all par for the course at this independent bookstore.
