Walk starts at 1:30 pm at Longfellow Middle School in Berkeley (1500 Derby St), CA
END: Sunday, Jan 22nd at 2pm, at the Veterans Hospital in San Francisco (4150 Clement St), CA**
The last American soldiers have recently returned home from the Iraq war. To honor the sacrifices made, and to contribute to healing the wounds of American veterans and Iraqi children disabled by the war, Berkeley business woman, teacher and mother-of-two Anushka Drescher has committed to a 24-hr non-stop fundraising walk through the East Bay and San Francisco.
Anushka’s charity walk will take place this weekend January 21-22, from 1:30 pm Saturday to 1:30 pm Sunday. After a short blessing ceremony at 1:15 pm on Saturday in front of Longfellow Middle School, on Derby St** in Berkeley, Anushka will start walking at 1:30 pm, traverse 8 Bay Area Cities (Berkeley, Kensington, El Cerrito, San Pablo, Richmond, Albany, Oakland and San Francisco)** and end at the VA Hospital on Clement Street** in San Francisco at 1:30 pm on Sunday. She will be joined on various parts of the walk by family, friends and supporters.
The walk will pause for a minute of silence at two “Blue Star Memorial Byway” Markers, at Arlington (Veterans) Park in El Cerrito at 4:30 pm and near the El Cerrito City Hall and Police Station at 11 pm. The Blue Star markers are symbols that honor the sacrifice made by men and women in the American military. In San Francisco, the walk will pass through the Presidio, a former military installation turned State Park, and by the Legion of Honor, built to commemorate California soldiers who died in World War I.
Anushka’s goal and birthday wish (she turns 43 on January 23rd) is to raise $5,000, with the average contributor donating $3/hr of walking, or $72. Donations will be collected until February 13th. The total donations will be split evenly, with half going to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund (www.semperfifund.org), benefiting disabled American Veterans, and half going to No More Victims (www.nomorevictims.org), a non-profit organization supporting the recovery of Iraqi children maimed during the war. All proceeds will be passed on to the beneficiary organizations on Valentine’s Day, 2012.
More information about the walk, including Anushka’s estimated time of arrival at various places of interest in the Bay Area, is on Anushka’s Facebook Events page “Woman Who Walks 24 hr Charity Walk 2012” at http://www.facebook.com/events/create/?eid=271811846212058. She can also be tracked during her walk by using the I-phone app “Find Friends”. Send a request to track her progress using the email address adrescher@sbcglobal.net.
