Vetoing Valentine's? 5 Ways to Rebel in Berkeley
Whether you're love sick, sick of love, or just want to do something different this Valentine's Day, here are some ideas to give Feb. 14 the cold shoulder. Add your own in the comments.
1. See An Action Movie
Is there anything less romantic than the Cold War, fighting wolves in the wilderness and Dwayne Johnson (aka, The Rock)?
If you think not, then check out Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy (trailer here) at Shattuck Cinemas, The Grey (trailer here) playing at UA Berkeley 7, and Journey 2: the Mysterious Island (trailer here) at UA Berkeley 7.
Stay away from sentimental movies like Beauty and the Beast, War Horse, Big Miracle and The Vow.
2. Do Something New With Strangers
There may not be plenty of fish, but there certainly is plenty of tofu at Vegan Speed Dating. Sample the soy and the strangers at Saturn Cafe on Feb. 14.
Or, connect with the random people who are meeting and forming groups all the time in Berkeley through meetup.com. On Feb. 14, enjoy Valentine's Day for All the Single Ladies, a night bicycle ride at Lake Chabot or a climbing session at Berkeley Ironworks Climbing and Fitness.
3. Go Out for an Un-Romantic Meal (But Mainly Drinks)
An anti-Valentine's Day shouldn't be depressing. So up the fun factor while keeping it casual and dine at one of Berkeley's breweries or pubs. TryPyramid or Triple Rock breweries, or grab some take out and bring it to the Albatross. Avoid smooching couples by sitting at the bar.
4. Get Crafty
Join the knitting circle at the Free Speech Movement Cafe on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at noon — and every Tuesday thereafter. You'll have a comfy pair of socks in no time.
5. Make a Pledge for Your Heart
Dedicate February to improving your heart's health. You could make a small change like aiming to reduce your salt intake or commit yourself to a challenge like running a 5K every week. Share your pledge and progress with Berkeley Patch. Read our Patch Pledge introduction for more information.
