UC Survey: Most Popular Websites Track Users

All of the 100 most popular websites install cookies on users' computers, census finds.

A UC Berkeley survey released Tuesday has found that the majority of popular websites monitor their users.

The Berkeley Center for Law and Technology collected data from the 100, 1,000 and 25,000 most frequently used websites. Most collect information on users with tracking software, the Daily Californian reports.

According to the report accompanying the Web Privacy Census, the main goal of the May 17 census, “is to define and quantify vectors for tracking consumers on the internet.” The center plans to conduct surveys on a quarterly basis.
