UC Police Release Description of Suspected Killer

UC Berkeley police on Monday issued a description of the suspected shooter in the early Sunday morning slaying of a 21-year-old Fremont man off Grizzly Peak Boulevard above the UC campus.

Police on Monday identified the victim in the Sunday morning shooting on Grizzly Peak Boulevard and released a description of the alleged shooter.

Fatally shot was Alberto Santana-Silva, 21, of Fremont, according to UC Berkeley Police Lt. Marc DeCoulode.

The shooting occurred at a pull-off shoulder near signpost 16 between Centennial Drive and South Park Drive just before 5:38 a.m., when police began receiving 911 calls alerting them to the crime, DeCoulode said. Several people were in the area at the time, he said.

About 20 or 30 minutes earlier, there had been "probably some type of argument among a group of people up there," DeCoulode said. Santana-Silva apparently had attempted to play a mediator role, he said.

A man and a female companion left the scene, and then the man returned a short while later and shot several times into the while Toyota sedan that contained Santana-Silva, striking him, DeCoulode said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter was described as a Hispanic or Filipino man, ranging from mid-20s to mid-30s in age, about 5-feet 8-inches tall, about 200 pounds with a shaved or bald head, DeCoulode said. He had been accompanied by an Asian female, about 5-feet 3-inches tall of average build with black hair in a pony tail.

There may have been two other vehicles at the scene at the time, including a white Chevy Suburban or similar vehicle and a candy-red Chevy Caprice with chrome wheels or spokes, DeCoulode said.

Anyone with information about the suspect or crime is asked to contact UC Berkeley police 510-642-9088.
